    1851 census: in High Street, Wivenhoe, Ann HOWLING (64, mariners wife, born Bocking, Essex), Mary COLLIER (daughter, 26, shipwrights wife, born Wivenhoe) and Elizabeth HOWLING (22, straw bonnet maker, born Wivenhoe).

    By 1861 John was a widower.

    Birth registered as John Wallace Howling.

    1911 census: at 1 Mona Place, Hales Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (6 rooms), John HOWLING (71, master mariner unemployed), Sarah Ann HOWLING (60, married 27 years, 3 children, 2 living, 1 dead), John Wallis HOWLING (son, 24, clerk in Building Society, born Roath, Cardiff, Glam., Wales), Dorothy May HOWLING (daughter, 20, unemployed, born Roath, Cardiff, Glam., Wales) and a visitor, Arthur COLE (20, single, shop assistant drapery, born Cheltenham).

    It's possible that John married for a third time in 1919, Mabel Grace CANE, in Birmingham (Q3 1919 6d/807). However, Mabel would have been only 37 by 1919 and it's possible that the 1919 marriage was between Mabel and John Wallis junior. But Mabel's death at age 87, in Q3 1969, was registered in Sheffield, where John Wallis senior's death was registered. The marriage cerificate would resolve this but has not been obtained.

    John's death at age 90 was probably that registered in Ecclesall Bierlow in Q2 1931 but why he should have died in Sheffield remains to be established.

    John married Ellen Ann Minter in Jun 1869 in Brightlingsea, Essex. Ellen (daughter of William Minter and Eliza ORMES) was born in Dec 1841 in Brightlingsea, Essex; was christened on 5 Jun 1842 in Brightlingsea, Essex; died on 4 Nov 1877 in Brightlingsea, Essex. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
