It's not clear what became of George's second wife Sarah Elizabeth OFFORD whom he married in 1867 - she doesn't appear in the 1871 census but there is no sign of her death being registered. George Golding himself was counted as master of the 'Centalie', described as widower, age 48.

1881 census: George was counted on the 'Dauntless' (a fishing smack registered at Colchester) at Southwick, Shoreham, Sussex. His wife Sarah was still living in Sidney Street, Brightlingsea with 4 HALSTEAD children, George (34), Grace (24), Moses F (22) and Georgiana (20) and Ernest Minter (13).

March 2010: Chris Goddard's family tree at www.webrarian.co.uk/phpGedView establishes a link between Edward John Minter and Charles Minter bap. 9 May 1843 of the Ash group. The link is complicated and I haven't checked that it all works but it goes like this:

1.The wife of Charles Minter (of the Ash, Kent group) was Ann Elizabeth MILTON.
2. Ann's paternal grandfather was John MILTON, born Essex about 1801 or 1802.
3. John MILTON had a brother, Joseph MILTON, born Essex about 1811 or 1812.
4. Joseph MILTON had a daughter, Louisa Elizabeth MILTON, born Barking, Essex 1845.
5. Louisa Elizabeth MILTON married Edward HARVEY in Barking in 1867.
6. Edward HARVEY was the son of Thomas HARVEY and the brother of Fred HARVEY, born Brightlingsea, Essex on 29 Jan 1865.

September 2010: from James Earley:
"After consulting my Grandfather I have found out some more information. It's with regards to his grandfather Edward John Minter (EJM) 1848-1932 and in particular his will. This is an extract from a visit to brightlingsea by Edward Frank Minter which he wrote.

EJM was a draper and the church was his part time activity.

Fountain House, New Street, Brightlingsea was home to EJM and was left by him to his single daughter Ada. Ada was believed to have been left more money than her brothers and sisters. The house was allowed to get in to disrepair by Ada. When EFM visited various times between 1945-50 he was concerned. The house was sold and Ada moved into a bungalow which on her death was disposed of and the balance of the estate was shared between her nine nephews and nieces."

The mention of a son Joseph is interesting - he wasn't mentioned in 1901 and no trace of his birth registration has been found.

Although most refer to 'Ernest Minter' a set of service records at Ancestry.com appears to relate to Arthur Ernest. They show that he enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers on 15 March 1916 and was transferred to the Z Reserve on 26 February 1919, at which time his address was 5 St Johns Terrace, Shoreham by Sea. On one document a date of birth of 24 September 1880 is given; elsewhere ages of 35 and 38 are mentioned. None of these ties up with Arthur Ernest's true date of birth. Next-of-kin was given on one form as Mrs L Minter, 7 Buckingham Street, Shoreham, on another as George Minter, father, of the same address. On joining the army Arthur Ernest said he was a fisherman.
While in the army, in France, Arthur Ernest had an appendectomy. This left him complaining that he was unable to do heavy work or lift heavy things and his condition appears to have persuaded the army medical examiners that there was under 20% disability. It's not shown whether a disability pension was awarded.

There's a mystery surrounding Albert's first marriage, for which I have the marriage certificate copy. The precise details are as follows:
Marriage by licence at the Register Office, Croydon on 24 January 1918. Albert Edward Minter, 23, bachelor, seaman merchant service of 48 Silcott Street, Brightlingsea, Essex, father Albert Edward Minter, marine engineer. Millicent Alice Saunders, 30, widow of 33 Moffat Road, Thornton Heath, father John Monloy (sic), master baker. Witnesss J Minter, F Foster.
I've tried all sorts of searches to find Millicent prior to marriage, and to try and find out what happened after the marriage and before Albert married Dorothy in 1923. 'Monloy' looks like a transcription error and could be 'Manley'. If so Millicent could have been she whose birth was registered in Q4 1888 at Lewisham (1d/1149). But I've been unable to trace a marriage to 'Saunders', or any death of a 'Saunders' which might have been Millicent's husband.
If Millicent's father was John MANLEY, he could be the man whose death was registered at Croydon in Q1 1891.

According to an item in the National Archives (ref MINTER COR/1/3/2316 1 Nov 1926), Frederick committed suicide by placing himself on a railway line. He was 21, of 8 Mayflower Road, Haywards Heath, Sussex.
July 2016: James Earley has found newspaper reports which confirm Frederick's suicide and give some background to it. As summarised by James:
"I found a coroners meeting into his suicide. Frederick had become infatuated with a married woman. They married and six days later he committed suicide through guilt. However, it turns out that Frederick didn't even marry Mrs Vere of Haywards Heath and an advertisement confirming this was put in the paper."

James Earley also sent me a newspaper report from earlier in 1926. He summarised the report as follows:
"Frederick and his sister Nellie were in a motorcycle accident in January 1926. Frederick had a fracture to his leg and got arrested by the police."
