Dudley, as he was known, was born on Lincoln Street, Wakefield. He was a teacher - he was very successful and was known in Wakefield as a stalwart of the church, education and Rugby Union.
After Grammar school he attended Leeds University, and began to teach, eventually reaching Deputy Head. He promoted many sports in Wakefield, including cricket.
