- Porter was an ADC in the US Navy and was killed in a plane crash. According to the Aviation Safety Network website, the plane was a Martin P5M-1 Marlin. It crashed during a night takeoff in Willoughby Bay when it crashed into a seawall at Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia. Porter was one of the four fatalities. A contemporary newspaper report said that Porter was the plane's co-pilot.
