    Notes
    • Records at The National Archives, found by Mike Minter, show that May applied to become an Army Laundress in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. At the time she was living at 11 Raleigh Road, Penge, London SE 20. She enlisted at St Leonards-on-Sea on 24 September 1917. She was posted to Etaples camp in France on 18 October 1917 and spent some time in hospital there in January/February 1918. Her discharge was authorised on 18 December 1918 on medical grounds (pregnancy) This was 2 days after May had married. May finally left the service in January 1919. Her son John P Collins was born a few months later but died within months.

By 1939 May's husband was living with his second-wife-to-be. I haven't been able to work out what became of May.
