| Notes |
- John's first wife was probably Sophia SALMON and they probably married on 3 June 1834 at Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
1841 census: in St Margarets Street, Ipswich, John (25, painter) and Sophia (35, born in Suffolk).
London Gazette 24 August 1847:
WHEREAS a Petition of John Minter, formerly of Saint Margaret's-street, parish of Saint Margaret,
Ipswich, in the county of Suffolk, Painter, Plumber, and Glazier, and occasionally a Builder, afterwards of Saint Margaret's-street, Ipswich aforesaid, Painter, Plumber, and Glazier, and Beer Shopkeeper, and now of Jubilee-terrace, parish of Saint Margaret's, Ipswich aforesaid, Painter, Plumber, and Glazier, an insolvent debtor, having been filed in the Court of Bankruptcy, and the interim order for protection
from process having been given to the said John Minter, under the provisions of the Statutes in that case made and provided, the said John Minter is hereby required to appear in Court before Robert George Cecil Fane, Esq. the Commissioner acting in the matter of the said Petition, on the 2d day of September next, at half past ten o'clock in the forenoon precisely, at the Court of Bankruptcy, in
Basinghall-street, in the city of London, for his first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be further dealt with according to the provisions of the said Statutes; and the choice of the creditors' assignees is to take place at the time so appointed. All persons indebted to the said John Minter, or that have any of his effects, are not to pay or deliver the same but to Mr. William Whitmore,
No. 2, Basinghall-street, London, the Official Assignee, nominated in that behalf by the Commissioner acting in the matter of the said Petition.
1851 census: in Key Street, St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich, John (38, retailer of spirits) and Sophia (40, born London). It's assumed that this was the same Sophia as in 1841 although the ages don't tally and the birthplaces are different. Son Frederick has not been found.
London Gazette 27 February 1857:
WHEREAS a Petition of John Minter, formerly of St. Margaret-street, parish of St. Margaret, Ipswich,
in the county of Suffolk, Painter and Glazier and late and now of the Smack Inn, Key-street, parish of St. Mary Key, Ipswich aforesaid, Innkeeper, Painter, and Glazier, and occasionally a Builder, an insolvent debtor, having been filed in the County Court of Suffolk, at the Shirehall, Ipswich,
and an interim order for protection from process having been given to the said John Minter, under the provisions of the Statutes in that case made and provided, the said John Minter is hereby required to appear before the said Court, on the 12th of March next, at ten in the forenoon precisely, for his first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be further dealt with according to the provisions of the said Statutes; and the choice of the creditors' assignees is to take place at the time so appointed. All persons indebted to the said John Minter, or that have any of his effects, are not to pay or deliver the same but to Mr. Charles Pretyraan, Registrar of the said Court, at his office, at Silent-street, Ipswich, the Official Assignee of the estate and effects of the said insolvent.
Listed in Melville's 1856 Directory as John Minter, Smack [Inn], Key Street, Ipswich.
Kelly's Directory for 1858 has an entry for John Minter, Smack, & painter, glazier & gilder, Key Street, Ipswich. Also listed under Carvers & Gilders.
The Ipswich Journal of 25 August 1860 reported a case at the Ipswich Police Court in which Emma Sage, an unfortunate [probably meaning prostitute], was charged with assaulting John Minter and Mary Ann Minter. The defendant had gone into the Smack Inn and spoke to a sailor whom she wanted to go out with her. He refused and she threw his glass, and that of several other people, to the floor. On being ordered to leave, she struck Mrs Minter and hit John Minter in the eye. Witnesses were called and at the end of the case the defendant was convicted and fined 2s 6d and costs; in default, 7 days imprisonment.
1861 census: in Key Street, St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich, John (47, painter), second wife Mary Ann (19, born Kelsale, Suffolk), Frederick (16, ship carpenter), Flora Anne (1 month) and Harriet MOYSE (mother-in-law, married, 46, nurse, born Benhall, Suffolk). When John and Mary Ann married, Mary Ann's father was noted as 'deceased' so perhaps her mother had married again and become Harriet MOYSE.
The following extract from the London Gazette, 23 June 1868, probably refers to this John Minter:
"John Minter, of the Lion, Beer-house, in the parish of Saint Margaret, Ipswich, in the county of Suffolk, Beer-house Keeper and Painter, adjudicated bankrupt on the 28th day of April, 1868. An Order of Discharge was granted by the County Court of Suffilk, holden at Ipswich, on the 18th day of June, 1868."
The enhanced GRO birth registration index gives the maiden name of Mary Ann Minter's mother, whose birth was registered at Ipswich in Q4 1862, as EMMERSON. Mary Ann is assumed to have been the daughter of John Minter and Mary Ann nee EMERSON but I can find no other trace of her.
1871 census: at the Britannia Inn, Great Whip Street, St Peter, Ipswich, John (57, beerhouse keeper), Mary A (30, born Kelsely, Norfolk), Lora (11), Arthur (7), John (5), 'Meley' * (2) and Kate (1 month).
* Assumed to be Alice Rachel whose birth was registered in Q1 1869. No trace subsequently.
1881 census: in Foundry Lane, St Peter, Ipswich, Mary A (widow, 38, general shop keeper, born Saxmundham, Suffolk), Arthur (19, engine fitter) and John (13, scholar).
1891 & 1901 censuses: not found.
