| Notes |
- From findagrave.com:
Mr. Hugh L. McElroy, who formerly resided here and was well known to many of our people, died at his home in Kansas City Monday, aged 89 years. He had been ill only a few days with pneumonia. When quite a young man Mr. McElroy married Miss Mary Handy, of this place, and bought the old Handy homestead on the Lexington pike, where he lived for a number of years. Afterward he and his wife moved to Kansas City to make their home and he entered the real estate business, and soon became the owner of vast holdings in the town and at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest men of Kansas City. He and his wife traveled very extensively both on this continent and abroad, and each fall he made a visit back to his old Kentucky home at Springfield, until this year. His remains were taken back there and funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church last Friday, the interment being beside his wife, who died a few years ago. He is survived by two brothers, Mr. W. T. and Col. John I. McElroy, of Springfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Mattie McDowell and Mrs. Lizzie McDowell, of Danville, besides many relatives both in Mercer and Washington counties.
