"Alicia Sowers Schweizer
AGE: 106 • Chesapeake City, MD
Alicia S. Schweizer passed away peacefully at the home of her son Navy Captain Edward Schweizer in Chesapeake City, MD on August 16th after a long & well lived life of 106 years. She often said she had an enchanted life. She met her husband, John Mel Schweizer Jr., in Hangchow, China, where he was a flight instructor for the Chinese Air Force in 1932. They were married in Japan in 1934. She lived the life of an Air Force wife, courageous and supportive, creating elegant, loving homes, 17 in all, in China, across the US, Germany, France, Panama & Trinidad . As her husband became a General who was Chief of Intelligence for NATO and later Vice President of Bell Aerospace, European representative, she entertained Presidents, Kings & Queens, astronauts and diplomats with graciousness. She was a talented sculptor winning prizes for her works. When the Schweizers retired to their home in Camarillo CA, she remained active in her art; she volunteered extensively at her church and the local hospital, and continued past her 100th birthday as a certified active Hospice Volunteer. For us, her greatest achievement was being a devoted, ever loving wife and mother of her sons: John M. Schweizer III & his wife Margaret, and Edward S. Schweizer, and his wife Suzan. She was grandmother of Edward S. Schweizer Jr. of California, Sally Alicia and her husband Ricci DePasquale, of Maryland, Elizabeth Serena and her husband Marce Scarbrough of Maryland, John D. Schweizer and his wife Deanna of California and Virginia Lee Schweizer of Oregon. She was also an example and loving mentor to six great grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Sofia Taylor of Florida, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Alicia was faith-filed, caring and generous. She was known by many as a very close and cherished friend. Her truest friend in life was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for whom she displayed the greatest devotion.
On Thursday the 20th there will be a 6PM Rosary followed by a time of visitation from 6:30 - 8PM at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 259 East Main St., Elkton, MD 21921. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, the 22nd at 10:30 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elkton Maryland. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband at a later date.
