| Notes |
- Charles's death was announced in the Kentish Gazette Tuesday 14 Jun 1831:
"Death: at Liverpool, on the 6th instant, Mr Chas. Minter, aged 58 years, son of the late Michael Minter esq. of Folkestone."
The following is somewhat speculative.
It appears that after his wife Margaret died Charles found his way to Liverpool and married again. The source for this is www.lan-opc.org.uk (website for Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks), which has the marriage by licence at St Nicholas, Liverpool on 21 December 1801 between Charles Minter, gentleman of Folkestone, Kent, and Sarah JOSEPH, minor of Liverpool. The same website has the burial on 10 June 1831 at Low Hill Cemetery, Everton, Lancs of Charles Minter, 57 of Christian Street, who died of consumption. The grave number is 3306. These items seems unarguably to relate to this Charles Minter.
The story then gets less certain.
The Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks website has the marriage by licence on 28 February 1829 at St Nicholas, Liverpool of John Ducrow, gentleman, and Eleanor Minter, spinster.
John Ducrow was famous in the 1820s and early 1830s as a clown in Astley's Theatre. His brother Andrew was equally well-known and there is much about them on the web.
John Ducrow died of consumption in 1834. In 1838 his widow Eleanor married Benjamin Stickney, an equestrian who had worked for Andrew Ducrow. This marriage is on Ancestry. Eleanor Ducrow is described in the marriage register as of full age, a widow, father Charles Minter, officer on the army, deceased.
It is surely no coincidence that Eleanor's first marriage took place in the same church in Liverpool that Charles Minter married in 1801, or that when Eleanor married for a second time she gave her father's name as Charles Minter. There are two pieces of information that would settle the issue, firstly a record of Eleanor's birth/baptism and secondly confirmation that Charles Minter was in the army. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find either of these. But for the time being I'm assuming that Eleanor was the daughter of Charles Minter and his second wife Sarah JOSEPH.
