Marcella Winn Minter, 88, of Martinsville, Va. passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Starling Avenue Baptist Church, Martinsville with visitation preceding the service at 10 a.m. A private graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
The daughter of the late Horatio Sterling Winn and Annie Schilbe Winn, she was born May 27, 1929. She grew up in Martinsville, Va., graduated from Martinsville High School (1947); graduated with an Associates degree from Bluefield (1949) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Meredith College (1951). She earned a Master of Religious Education degree from Carver School of Missions and Social Work, Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In addition, she earned a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Radford University, Radford, Va.
During her college summer breaks, she worked for the Virginia Baptist Training Union, teaching study courses all over the Commonwealth. Her first professional teaching position was with Oak Hill Academy, Mouth Wilson, Va. She moved back to Martinsville to care for her mother, then taught at Fieldale High School. In 1957, she married her husband of 58 years, Owen Randolph Minter Sr., and settled in Martinsville, Va. Marcella then taught in the Martinsville City School system, Druid Hills Elementary School for the majority of her career until her retirement in 1994.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Minter was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Randolph Minter Sr.; and a daughter, Anne Randolph Minter.
Mrs. Minter is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Kotchish (Steve) of Collinsville, Va.; son, Owen Randolph Minter Jr. (Lucy) of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter, Anne Claire Minter and step-granddaughter, Suzanne Bradley Kotchish; grandson, Owen Randolph Minter III; step-grandson, Stephen Matthew Kotchish II; sister, Ethel Marie Winn Kendall (Ben) of Danville, Va.; and brother, James S. Winn (Geneva) of Martinsville, Va.
Marcella was baptized as a professing Christian by Dr. Chevis Horne, First Baptist Church of Martinsville. She later joined Starling Avenue Baptist Church and was a member for over 70 years. She began teaching Sunday School at the age of 17 and served as a long term Deacon, founder/teacher for over 30 years of her Sunday School Class, founder/volunteer of the Home Bound Ministry and served as a youth fellowship leader for many years. She loved reading to the children of First Baptist Church Daycare and volunteered for the American Cancer Society.
