- January 2017: email from Paul Twynam, Toronto, Canada:
"I found the attached obituary in my mother's archives recently. It was the property of Gertrude Harris (a Minter)."
The obituary is from an unnamed newspaper and isn't dated. It reads as follows:
"CAPT. LESLIE HARKNETT, PRESTATYN
It is with regret we record the sudden death on February 17th of Capt. Leslie Harknett, of The Rosings, 102 Meliden Road, Prestatyn.
Capt. Harknett joine the Royal Artilley at the age of 14 years as a boy soldier and served with the Ols Contemptibles in France in 1914. He was later wounded, mentioned in despatches and commissioned for gallantry in the field. He also saw service in India, Iraq and Egypt. He was granted the honorary rank of Captain in 1945. On his retirement frpm the army his love for children attracted him to the NSPCC which he served for 25 years with an interruption for military service during World War II. This Society was represented at the funeral by Senior Inspector Thos. Lewis of Rhyl, and ex-Inspector T. Powell.
The funeral took place on February 20th when a service at St Melyd Parish Church, conducted by the Vicar, Rev. T Lewis William, BA, RD, assisted by the Rev. D Jones, Vicar of Rhuddlan, was followed by cremation at Colwyn Bay. The Union Jack and Capt. Harknett's sword were on the coffin."
