CHILLICOTHE, IL - Joe E. Minter, 78, of Chillicothe passed away at 2:36 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Bel-Wood Nursing Home, where he was a resident for the last four months.
Joe was born the seventh of eight children on Oct. 17, 1934, to Cecil Clyde and Verna Emmaline (Finch) Minter in Benton, Kentucky.
At the age of 18, he left Kentucky and on March 3, 1953, started his 38-year career at Caterpillar Inc. While at Cat, he worked at the Morton plant, East Peoria proving grounds, East Peoria factory, Mapleton Foundry, Mossville Tech center, Pioneer Park Tire development, Tire manufacturing in Peoria.
Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 1957 to 1959 as a helicopter mechanic at Pope Air Force Base, Fort Bragg, N.C. While serving, he was stationed for four months at Camp Desert Rock, Nev., which was the atomic proving grounds for the U.S. Army. While there, he witnessed the largest U.S. atomic explosion, called Old Smokey.
After active duty, he served eight years in the Army Reserves.
On Dec. 10, 1955, he married Marcia J. Conver in Corinth, Miss. To this union they were blessed with four children.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, two sisters and his son, Kyle L. Minter.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia; three brothers, Elwood (Shirly), Bill and Glen (Gwen) Minter; three daughters, Tamara (Walt) Feeser, Sue Minter Furuhomen and Jo Lynn (Mark) Minter Carr. Also surviving are grandchildren, Amy Feeser, Tiffany Minter Lipscomb, Brielyn (Tyler) Smith, Marci Furuholmen, Eric (Lisa), Zach, Charly and Danni Kilpatrick; two stepgrandchildren and two2 great-granddaughters.
A man known for his integrity and willingness to help anyone in need, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Cremation will take place.
