Notes |
- 1881 census: in Back Lane, Boxted John (29, ag lab), Mahala (23, ag lab wife) and Gertrude (5 months).
1891 census (indexed as QUINTE by ancestry.com): at Station Farm, Bergholt Road, Lexden, John (39, farm labourer), Isabella J (sic*) (35), Gertrude E (11), Rosanna* (7), Joseph W (3) and Minnie (1). All the children are shown as born Boxted.
* the apparent name change from Mahala to Isabella (and back to Mahala in 1901) is strange. Mahala/Isabella was born in Raydon which, according to later censuses, is where Rosanna was born. This too is difficult to understand.
In Q2 1895 Lydia May Minter's birth was registered (4a/617) at Colchester. The enhanced version of the GRO birth index shows mother's maiden name as KEEBLE. So it looks as if Lydia May was the daughter of John and Mahala Minter. But I can find no other trace of Lydia May. Without the birth certificate it's impossible to say whether she belongs in this family. If she does, what happened to her? It's just possible that there was some sort of name mix-up with Blanche, whose birth registration I can't find.
1901 census: in New Road, Tolleshunt Knights, Essex: John (50, foreman on farm), Mahala (40), Joseph (13), Minnie (11), Ethel (8), Blanche (7), Doris (4) and Edward (1).
