No entry for John appears in the Accounts of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards from 1 August 1847 to 31 March 1850.
John was in the Royal Horse Guards, as a trooper, at Hyde Park Barracks, Knightsbridge, London when his son John was born in November 1846.
John married Caroline Fowle as John Minter Perkins. It's unclear what happened to Caroline (there is no trace of her death under either Minter or Perkins between Q1 1841 and Q1 1851) but by 1851 John had moved to London and was living in Camberwell with Martha Hobday. As John Pirkins Minter, he married Martha in 1859 by which time they had had several children.
When John and Sarah were baptised on 7 November 1847 and 1 April 1849 John, labourer, and Martha were in Pomroy Street, Peckham, London. At the first of these baptisms John's full name of John Perkins Minter was recorded.
1851 census: at 29 Stockwell Street, Camberwell, London, John (34, labourer), Martha (29), John (4) and Sarah (2).
1861 census: at 4 Trafford [?Stafford] Place, Camberwell, London, John (43, labourer), Martha (39, unreadable occupation), John (14, labourer), Sarah (12, scholar), James (9, scholar), Stephen (7, scholar), Elizabeth (4, scholar) and Alberto (1).
John and Martha had a daughter, Martha Ann, baptised on 2 March 1862. The address appears to be 4 Stafford Place, John's occupation, stoker. Martha Ann died in 1866.
John and Martha had a son, John Hobday [Hobley in register of baptisms], baptised on 5 August 1866. The address was 4 Stafford Place, John's occupation, labourer. John Hobday died in 1867.
1871 census: at 4 Manor Terrace, White Post Lane, Camberwell, London, John (54, general labourer 'out of employ'), Martha (49), James (19, packing case maker), Stephen (17, packing case maker), Elizabeth (15) and Albert W (12).
1881 census: at 7 Manor Grove, Camberwell, London, John (64, carriage cleaner), Martha B (59) and Stephen (27, case maker) plus a lodger Albert Steadman (25, carman).
1891 census (indexed as WINTER by ancestry.com): at 8 Manor Grove, Camberwell, London, John (74, railway carriage cleaner), Martha (69) and Stephen (37, box maker, wood).
1901 census (indexed as MENTER by ancestry.com): at 8 Manor Grove, Camberwell, London, Martha (79, widow) and Stephen (47, card board box maker).
