| Notes |
- Although she married William Minter as Lilly ELWORTHY, a 44 year-old widow, the background is more complicated.
Although Elizabeth was born in January 1867, the earliest census records I've found are for 1871 (see her mother's Notes) and 1881. The latter is difficult to understand: it shows,
at 1 Grange Park Terrace, Church Road, Leyton, London, Elizabeth HAY (daughter, 14, scholar, born Bow) and Sarah - WEBSTER (servant, married, 35, housekeeper, born Lewisham, Kent). These two individuals appear to be in a separate household which may have been part of the Ashby household. But there's no indication of whose daughter Elizabeth was.
Long before she married William Minter, Elizabeth took up with an actor, William Thomas ELWORTHY. I haven't found a marriage. Elizabeth and William had three children, all registered with the surname FIELDEN (although the registration of the youngest appears in the BMD index as FEILDEN). FIELDEN was a surname that had been adopted (for reasons I haven't found out) by William Thomas Elworthy's brother Edward James.
Eizabeth's 1891 and 1901 Census appearances are shown in the Notes for William Thomas John Elworthy HODGE.
Elizabeth's relationship with William Thomas ELWORTHY was over by the time of the 1911 census. I haven't found Elizabeth in the 1911 census. One of her children, Elsie, aged 12 was a schoolgirl at the House of Mercy, Clewer, Windsor- she appears in the list as Elsie ELWORTHY.
1921 census: at Flat 4-12 Powis Square, Kensington, London, Lilly MINTER (head, 54y 5m, married, born Bow, E London, house hold occupation) and Lillie ELWORTHY (daughter, 28y 7m, single, born Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, telephone operator at Derry & Toms, drapers, High Street, Kensington London W8).
1939 Register: at Heathcot Sutton Drove, Seaford, Sussex
GREEN, later CREASEY, Alice born 27 Nov 1870, widow, unpaid domestic
MINTER, Elizabeth A L born 31 Jan 1867, married, unpaid domestic
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995:
MINTER Elizabeth Anne Linskill of 4 Lincoln-road Slades Green Erith Kent (wife of William Minter) died 30 July 1955 Administration (with Will) London 23 September to the said William Minter retired merchant navy chief steward. Effects £639.

- Married by licence. William Minter, 29, bachelor, second steward P&O Co of 63 Church Street, Kensington, father George Edward Minter, stationer. Lilly Elworthy, 44, widow* of 85 Semdeoon(?) Road, Croydon, father Robert Hay deceased, master mariner. Witnesses Ernest William Line and Walter Richard Bowden.
* as far as I can see, Lilly (not her proper name) wasn't previously married.
According to Gladys Vickers, William married a stewardess, lived in Bexleyheath and had no children. This is borne out by his marriage certificate - see above.
