The following is the opening paragraph of Charles's Guardian obituary of 23 October 2013: "Anthony Vivis, who has died suddenly aged 70, was a renowned translator of postwar German plays that habitually documented mythical misery in the urban jungle while relating to the ingrained tradition of Brecht, Georg Büchner, Gerhart Hauptmann and Schiller." Charles and Tinch collaborated on a number of literary projects.
