- Enlisted in June 1915 in the Royal Engineers, aged 20 years 8 months, a painter. Assigned to the 226th (Field) Company. Next of kin Frances Emily Minter, 65 --- Road, Penge (mother). Married Annie Florence Shirley at Holy Trinity Church, Beckenham, Kent on 23 September 1917. Address at enlistment 65 Pawlayne Road, Penge, Kent SE20. Child Alfred James born 24 June 1918 at Penge. Service no. 100244. Originally Sapper, then Lance Corporal. Assessed as a skilled painter.
Served in France between 1915 and 1917; in 1917, wounded by a shell in his shoulder and left leg and spent 5 months in hospital. Discharged in February 1919 and awarded a pension. Address 30 Tennyson Road, Penge.

Maureen Vince has a copy of the death certificate of Alfred Edward Minter whose body was found on 20th April 1941 in the Old Palace School, St Leonard's Street, Bow, London. He was a fireman and died on duty - the old school was being used as a sub-fire station and was destroyed by a bomb. Alfred is remembered on a memorial in Beckenham Cemetery and Crematorium at Beckenham, Greater London. The memorial records that Alfred was one of 21 gallant members of the Beckenham Auxiliary Fire Service killed by enemy action whilst on duty 19 - 20 April 1941. Alfred's name also appears on the blitz memorial for fireman at St Paul's, London.
