Mabel Montgomery, a daughter of William and Nancy [Red] Montgomery, was born on April 9th 1876 in Giddings, Texas. Her family moved to Abilene in 1881; where her father become the first U.S. Postmaster.
Mabel was valedictorian of her graduating class at Abilene High School. In 1893 she was graduated from Stuart Seminary in Austin, and returned to Abilene; where she taught school for several years at Central Ward. While a student at Stuart Seminary, Mabel kept a diary¹ between 1893 and 1894. This diary is now archived at the Texas State and Archives in Austin.
On August 1st 1901, Mabel Montgomery married William Adolphus "Will" Minter, a young merchant in Abilene in 1901. This union was blessed with the following known children:

William Dunovant (1904-1976)
John Louis "Jack" (1908-1971)
While Will Minter ran the family dry good store located at 242 Pine Street; Mabel was active in various civic organizations, and was also a member of the Shakespeare Club, the Abilene Woman's Club, the Just-Sew Club. The Minter's were members of the First Presbyterian Church; where Mabel served as historian for many years.
On the September 20th 1956, Mabel Minter departed this life in the 80th year of her age. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband at the city cemetery in Abilene.

Mrs. Minter Estate Valued at $78,003
The estate of the late Mrs. W. A (Mabel Montgomery) Minter, Jr. 80, will go to her three children according to a report filed in County probate court. The estate is worth an estimated $78,003.34 with debts of $1,884.41.
Mrs. Minter, widow of the founder of Minter's Dry Goods, died September 20th. The preliminary inheritance report was the first action taken in beginning administration of th estate. It showed she died without leaving a will. The beneficiaries are Miss Mabel Minter, 58, of 340 Beech Street, Will D. Minter, 51, of 1201 Sylva Dr., and Jack L. Minter, 48, 1411 Tanglewood. Assets of the estate were shown as real estate, stocks, bonds, notes, accounts, petty cash, certificates and deposits, jointly own properly, and person property.
