There is confusion about birthplaces and ages. 1910 US Federal Census: in East Railroad Street, Clinton Ward 1, DeWitt County, Illinois (all HUNSLEY), Steve A (head, 65, married 20 years, 2 children both living, laborer, born England), Veronica (wife, 54, married 20 years, 2 children both living, housekeeper, born Ohio), John (son, 17, born Illinois, no occupation) and Maude DOTY (stepdaughter, 24, single, born Illinois, father born England, bookkeeper, grocery shop). Stephen appears to have been married two or possibly three times, as follows: 1. 9 Jan 1868 in Sangamon County, Illinois, Mary Ellen CHANDLER (Illinois, Marriages, 1851 - 1900, at Ancestry.com). 2. About 1889 probably in either Sangamon or DeWitt County, to Veronica. This marriage is known from the 1900 census above. It looks as if Veronica was previously married to someone called DOTY since in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Maud(e) DOTY Is referred to as Stephen's step-daughter. 3. The possible third marriage is referred to on the 'HUNSLEY family tree' at Ancestry. It is said there to have taken place on 8 Jul 1889 in DeWitt, to Dora E DOTY. I can't find anything to back this up and it looks suspicious that the marriages to Veronica (who the 'HUNSLEY family tree' has as Veronica BARKER) and Dora DOTY are said to have happened in the same year. My conclusion having looked carefully at all the available evidence (there are some important items missing, eg the 1890 US census, birth certificates for John & Laura), is that Stephen Hunsley married only twice. His first wife was undoubtedly Mary Ellen CHANDLER: I can't find her death but unless they divorced, it must have occurred before July 1889. Stephen married for the second time on 8 July 1889. The record of this marriage in the FamilySearch IGI give's the bride's name as Dora E Martin Doty, her father as Robert Martin and mother as Eliza Delvey. It's clear from this (and from the fact that Maud Doty was born in 1882) that Dora was married to a DOTY before she married Stephen. It remains a mystery why Stephen's wife's name appears as Veronica in 1900 and 1910 and, even after Stephen's death in 1919, as "Berconia" in 1920, at which time she was still living in Clinton, DeWitt but now with her son John Hunsley. Despite this her death in 1927 was registered as Dora E Hunsley. Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 (at Ancestry) has a record which appears to relate to this Stephen. It gives the following details: Born Jun 1845, England, of William and Mary (sic) Hunsley Died 19 Jul 1919 at Clinton, DeWitt, Illinois Buried 21 Jul 1919 in Woodlawn Cemetery Occupation retired contractor No information about wife. Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 (at Ancestry) also has a record which relates to Stephen's second wife: Name Dora E HUNSLEY (Dora E MARTIN) Born 11 Aug 1853, Ohio, of P R MARTIN of Pennsylvania and Eliza TOLBEY Died 30 Jan 1927 at Clinton, DeWitt, Illinois Buried 1 Feb 1927 (place not stated) Occupation housewife Spouse Stephen HUNSLEY Comment: 42 years of this place.
