| Notes |
- I think the reference (in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, as below) to Benham, Berks is a clue to Emma's parents. One of the families I found in the 1841 census living in Marsh Benham, Speen, Berkshire was that of William and Mary Povey. William's age was shown as 50 and his occupation ag. lab. Mary was shown as 40 and there were 6 children ranging from 15 down to Louisa, aged 2 (see 1861 census below). The name William would tie-in with the the name Emma gave as her father when she married William Semper in 1858.
1851 census: at 15 Howley Place, Paddington, London, Emma PERVEY (sic) (28, servant, born Benham, Berks) and Harriet PERVEY (sic) (26, servant, born Newbury, Berks) were servants in the home of Mrs J J A GIRDWOOD (53, physician's wife) and her daughters E A (22) and Mary S (20).
Emma was probably the daughter of William and Mary POVEY who lived in Benham, Speen, Berks at the time of the 1841 census. The identity of Harriet hasn't been established.
1861 census: at 11 Howley Place, Paddington, Emma POVEY (unmarried), (38, cook, born Benham, Berks) and Louisa POVEY (unmarried, 22, housemaid, born Benham, Berks), were servants with the GIRDWOOD family (as in 1851 as far as Emma is concerned, and despite the fact that Emma had married in 1858).
Louisa POVEY was probably Emma's sister - she appeared with William and Mary POVEY in the 1841 census, aged 2.
1871 census: at 20 Richmond Street, St Marylebone, London, Emma SEMPER (head, widow, 68 (sic - should be 48), born Newbury, Berks) and Agnes POVEY (niece, 15, born Newbury, Berks).
Emma's age is very wrong and I suspect Agnes's age is also wrong. She might have been the Agnes whose birth was registered at Newbury in Q4 1842, in which case her parents would have been John POVEY and Sarah nee WATTS. Agnes appeared in the 1881 census, aged 38, born Speen, Berks, a domestic servant in a boarding house for Dulwich College sudents in High Street, Dulwich, London.
Emma married John Thomas BROWNE in 1879. They appeared in the:
1881 census: in High Street, Hanwell, Middlesex (both BROWNE), J.T. (head, married, 76, cordwainer, born Chiswick, Middlesex) and Emma (wife, 60(?), born Speen, Berks).
1891 census: in High Street, Hanwell, Middlesex (both BROWNE), John T. (head, married, 86, cordwainer, born Chiswick, Middlesex) and Emma (wife, 70, born Newbury, Berks).
These two names are followed by another entry in the same household, which looks like "volf", widow, 76, born Cripplegate, London.
John T Browne's death was registered in Q4 1891, and Emma's (as Emma BROWN) in Q1 1897, both at Brentford RD.
Whilst researching Emma POVEY, I looked for POVEY in all the 1841 census records for Speen, Newbury, Berkshire. In case they are of any interest to anyone, I'm recording the results here. Each line represents a single household.
