| Notes |
- February 2020: email correspondence with Kelly Owens: Edward HUNSLEy was her 3rd great-grandfather.
1851 census: not found.
1861 census: in Summer Street, Barnsley, Yorks (all HUNSLEY except brother in law), Edward (head, 30, foreman tailor, born Scotter, Lincs), Mary (wife, 32, born Sheffield), John H (son, 8, scholar, born Sheffield) and Letitia M (daughter, 5, born Sheffield). Also brother-in-law Henry LINGARD (24, journeyman tailor, born Sheffield).
1867: Edward Hunsley of Newark-upon-Trent, Notts, tailor, formerly of Barnsley, was declared bankrupt in June and discharged from bankruptcy in July. ( London Gazette 11 June and 26 July 1867).
1871 census: in High Street, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire (all HUNSLEY), Edward (head, widower, 38, tailor cutter, born Scotter, Lincs), John H (son, 17, tailor, born Sheffield), Mary L (daughter, 15, machinist, born Sheffield), Annie (daughter, 10, scholar, born Barnsley, Yorks), Jean [presumably Jane in 1881 census] (daughter, 8, scholar, born Barnsley) and Kate (daughter, 1, born Newark, Notts).
1881 census (1): at 20 Meredith Street, Nottingham St Mary, Nottinghamshire (all HUNSLEY), Edward (head, married, 49, tailor cutter, born Lincolnshire), Mary [presumably Letitia Mary] (daughter, 26, tailoress, born Sheffield), Jane (daughter, 18, tailoress, born Barnsley), Kate (daughter, 13, scholar, born Nottm, Notts) and Jenny (daughter, 8 months, born Nottm, Notts).
Also at 20 Meredith Street but as a separate household were Eliza BEALE (head, widow, 30, tailoress, born Nottinghamshire), Lily BEALE (daughter, 2, born Nottingham) and Edward (son, 2 months, born Nottingham). As discussed below, these two children were almost certainly fathered by Edward HUNSLEY.
1881 census (2): at 2 Carnarvon Street, St Mary Nottingham (all HUNSLEY) Martha E (head, married, 39, born Bramcote), Ada* (daughter, unmarried, 15 or 16, worker in lace, born Nottingham), Florence (daughter, 8, scholar, born Bramcote) and Charles E (son, 4, scholar, born Bramcote). Also 3 lodgers.
* Kelly Owens says: "Ada Hunsley is recorded as being Martha’s daughter, this is incorrect and she is actually Ada Ginnever, Martha’s niece." Comment added by John Minter: the birth of an Ada GINNEVER was registered at Radford RD in Q1 1864 (7b/181), mother's maiden name BUTTERY. It seems that Ada's father George GINNEVER and Sarah BUTTERY didn't marry. Kelly Owens adds "Sarah died and 10 months later George moved to Liverpool" where he married Elizabeth EDWARDSON.
1891 census: at 173 Agnes Street, Nottingham St Mary, Nottinghamshire (all HUNSLEY), Edward (head, 60, foreman tailor, born Scotter, Lincolnshire), Martha (wife, 49, born Bramcote, Notts), Charles (son, 14, machinist in lace factory, born Bramcote, Notts), Florence (daughter, 17, machinist in lace factory, born Bramcote, Notts), William (son, 10, scholar, born Nottingham), Rex (son, 6, scholar, born Nottingham), Clarence (son, 5, scholar, born Nottingham), Violet M (daughter, 4, scholar, born Nottingham) and Lily, daughter, 12, scholar, born Nottingham).
There's something very odd about this family. Some of the children listed as Hunsleys in 1891 were actually registered with surname BEALE. As noted above, in 1881, when Edward lived at 20 Meredith Street, Nottingham, Eliza BEALE (30, widow) also lived at number 20 (as a separate household), with her daughter Lily BEALE (2) and Edward BEALE (2 months). So it would seem that Eliza BEALE was the mother of a number of children of which Edward was either the natural or the adoptive father. Eliza BEALE died in Q3 1889 and by 1891 the BEALE children became known as Hunsleys. Why Edward should have taken on such a responsibility is unknown. Kelly Owens has some of the relevant birth certificates and they, together with information on the enhanced version of the GRO birth index makes it possible to make a list of all the children with the surname BEALE. One confusing element in the list is that the mother's name isn't consistent. The list is as follows:
Grace Laura Hunsley BEALE born Q3 1876, died Q3 1876. No mother's maiden name.
Lily Hunsley BEALE born Q2 1879, died Q4 1892, mother's maiden name JACKSON.
William Edward BEALE born Q1 1881, mother's maiden name SMITH.
Adelaide Mary BEALE born Q1 1882, died Q2 1883, mother's maiden name WRIGHT.
Violet May BEALE born Q1 1883, mother's maiden name WRIGHT.
Rex Hunsley BEALE born Q1 1884, mother's maiden name WRIGHT.
Clarence Hunsley BEALE born Q1 1886, mother's maiden name WRIGHT.
Harold Hunsley BEALE born Q2 1887, died Q3 1887, mother's maiden name WRIGHT.
Although it isn't strictly correct, I have listed all 8 of the above children as HUNSLEYs. The chief justification for doing this is that the ones that survived eventually acquired the surname HUNSLEY.
1901 census: 1901 census: at 4 Barnby Crossing, Balderton, Nottinghamshire (all HUNSLEY), Edward (head, 70, tailor factory overlooker, born Scotter, Lincolnshire), Martha (wife, 55, born Bramcote, Notts), Violet May (daughter, 18, tailoress - machinist, born Nottingham) and Charles W** (son, 8, born Nottingham).
1911 census: in Barnby Road, Balderton, Nottinghamshire (5 rooms) (all HUNSLEY),
Martha E (head, 66, widow, married 32 years, 5 children, 2 living, 3 dead, born Bramcote, Notts) and Charles W** (son, 18, apprentice boiler maker, learning a trade at Mr Abbott's boiler works, born Nottingham).
** Kelly Owens has pointed out that Charles William HUNSLEY was actually Martha's grandson, the illegitimate son of Florence Elizabeth HUNSLEY who died when her son was about 3.
