| Notes |
- Lonzo Merrell Camp was a complex man. He had a fiery temper that he found difficult to control. Aaron Todd said that Lon Camp never saw a need to have much. He worked hard and did not respect anyone that did not work.
My Mother, Opal Todd, said that she tried to remember the good things about her Dad. She told me of a time that he went to town and bought she and her sister Nova a dress with an umbrella that matched. She said that she was very proud of that umbrella. Once he went to town and bought material for Lillie to make dresses for the girls. She said he hid the material. Opal said they searched and searched in great expectation.
Lon Camp had a problem with alcohol. Opal said that he didn't stay drunk but that he would "pitch drunks" and stay drunk for several days. He would get mean when he was drinking. She said that you couldn't provoke him.
Often the family called the "law" on him. Esther tells of a time that the Constable came to the house. She said that Lon went out and slapped him.
Esther laughed and said that the Constable slapped him back. Aaron told of a time that he went to a baseball game with Raymond Pruett in Elora. Aaron was about 13 years old. Lon was an Umpire and was arguing with a player.
Aaron said that he laughed and Raymond said "don't laugh Mr. Camp has a bad temper.
Opal said that she felt that she had very little security as a child. She said that they seemed to move every year. She said someone would make Lon a better offer and that they would move. Lon was a share cropper.
