Notes |
- Henry's parents may have been Robert and Martha GARNHAM, who had two children baptised at St Michael, Thorpe-le-Soken:
- Henry on 1 March 1713
- Mary on 9 June 1719
Courtesy of Jenny Taufana, we have Henry's Will of 9 December 1780. He left everything to his daughter Elizabeth *; she was to pay £5 to each of Henry's other children when they came of age. The children to benefit from this were named in the Will as:
Henry, Charlotte, Homan, Daniel, Zellah, Jonathan and John.
Homan Garnham was named as one of the executors.
* Elizabeth was actually born before Henry and Martha married - the following note appears in the St Michael, Thorpe-le-Soken parish register at 10 September 1769:
"Daughter of Henry & Martha GARNHAM was born on November 1st, 1764 & baptized about a fortnight after, as her father declared to me Samuel Lewis, Curate of this Parish, this tenth day of September 1769. As witness my hand [signed] Samuel Lewis."
The inclusion of Jonathan is significant. Jenny Taufana had been trying for years to find who Jonathan's parents were and it turns out that he was the illegitimate son of Sarah PILLING and, we assume, Henry GARNHAM. Henry must at some point have decided to adopt (in effect, if not in law) Jonathan, although there's no evidence to suggest what became of Sarah PILLING.
The Will makes no provision for Henry's wife Martha: she isn't even mentioned. Jenny speculates that this was because Martha was a lot younger than Henry and if she had remarried after Henry's death, her new husband would have had control and the children may not have benefitted.
