Norman Ford McGhee, 81, of 1880 Old Chatham Road, Martinsville, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Franklin County, Feb. 20, 1920, to the late William Lewis McGhee and the late Maggie McGhee McGhee. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Norene M. Corns, Estelle M. Midgett and Eva M. Fleming.
After serving for 45 years, he retired as a manager from Old Dominion Box Company. He belonged to McCabe Memorial Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the Army where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He served in battles and campaigns in New Guinea, the Northern Solomon Islands and Luzon. For this, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star, and the APT Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Clara Minter McGhee of the home; two sons, J. Stan McGhee of Martinsville and Don W. McGhee of Ridgeway; four sisters, Edna M. Garrett and Clara M. Clift, both of Martinsville, Nina M. Arnold of Waynesboro and Nadine M. Bradner of Chester; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Revs. Billy Graham and Lewis Harris officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park with military rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County.
