| Notes |
- From Gwyn Brandon:
[After her marriage to Henry John Wimble broke down William James's mother] "was unable to handle her son William James and placed him in the care of Barnardo's home for children, and he was eventually sent to Canada* where he didn't have an easy time of it. It seems he had an aversion to work and kept running away from the homes where he was placed. William James eventually returned to London as a teen and joined the military."
* as James Wm. Wimble, aged 9, William was a passenger on the SS Sardinian which left Liverpool for Quebec on 5 September 1895.
I haven't traced a return trip but William appeared in the 1911 census, aged 24, single, born Charlton, Kent, a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, in St Margaret & St John, London. Later on, he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal as a Sergeant in the Royal Garrison Artillery.
1939 Register: at 68 Church Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire
WIMBLE, William J born 13 Sep 1886, married, shopkeeper, general grocery
WIMBLE, Affia L born 23 Sep 1889, married, housewife
--- 1 closed record ---
WIMBLE, Iris L born 18 Apr 1928, school.
William and his entire family died from a bomb hitting his house in 1941. UK, WWII Civilian Deaths, 1939-1945 (at ancestry.com) gives the date of death for all four members of the family as 27 April 1941, at 16 Hale Street, Portsmouth. The bombing raid was part of the blitz which devastated parts of Portsmouth.
Gwyn Davie has a letter dated 26 October 1951 from Barnardo's Migration Department which quotes a report which says that the bomb which killed the family fell on William's shop in Church Road. It goes on to say that although the bodies of the children were found the next day, the bodies of William and Affia weren't found until 9 weeks later. This explains why the childrens' deaths were registered in Q2 1941 and their parents' in Q3.
