| Notes |
- 1891 census: at 39 Coolfin Road, West Ham, Essex (both WIMBLE), Henry (head, married, 36, AB seaman, born Deptford, Kent) and Mary A (daughter, 9, scholar, born Millwall).
As explained below, Henry's second wife Harriet (married, 37, laundry woman, born Bermondsey) and her daughter Florence (6, scholar, born Plumstead) were at the Home for Friendless Young Women, 459 & 461 Holloway Road, Upper Holloway, Islington, London.
1901 census: at 43 East Street, Charlton, London (all WIMBLE), Henry J (head, 46, compounder chemical, born Deptford, Kent), Eliza (wife, 47, born Bethnal Green, London), Annie A (daughter, 8, born Custom House, London) and William H (son, 5, born Woolwich, Kent).
Second wife Harriet ("widow", 44, cook, born Bermondsey) and her daughter Florence H (16, housemaid, born Plumstead) lived at 13 St Andrew's Road, Portsmouth, the home of a retired ex-Indian Army major general, Vincent W TREGEAR.
1911 census: at 9 Tamar Street, Charlton, London (4 rooms) (all WIMBLE), John H (head, 56, compounder, born Deptford, Kent), Eliza (wife, 45, married 21 years, 8 children, 6* still living, born Bethnal Green, London), Mary A A (daughter, 29, brander(?), born Millwall), Annie A (daughter, 19, brander(?), born Custom House, William H (son, 15 instrument, born Woolwich, Kent), Katharine (daughter, 10, school, born Charlton), Winifred (daughter, 5, school, born Charlton) and Dorothy (3, born Charlton).
* Of the two children who died, one was Alfred Francis (1899 - 1900). The other was probably the unnamed female who was born in Q4 1888 (with mother's maiden name BRIDGES) and died in the same quarter.
It's clear that Henry John WIMBLE had three partners. After his first wife died he married Harriet SYMONDS in April 1883 and had two children with her, Florence Maud Harriet in 1885 and William James in 1886. Gwyn Davie then takes up the story:
"Henry John and Harriet’s marriage fell on bad times and the couple split up. Harriet ended up in the poor house on Holloway Rd in London taking Florence Maud. She was unable to handle her son William James and placed him in the care of Barnardo’s home for children, and he was eventually sent to Canada where he didn’t have an easy time of it. It seems he had an aversion to work and kept running away from the homes where he was placed. William James eventually returned to London as a teen and joined the military.
Henry John started to keep company with the sister of his first wife Mary Ann. Her name was Eliza and she eventually shacked up with him and they lived as married and had five children. Annie, William Henry who married a Minter, Catherine my gran, Winifred and Dorothy. I can remember my gran referring to her sisters as Annie, Kitty, Winnie and Dolly. She never spoke of her brother William Henry. Also, grans name was misspelled on the census as ‘Katharine’. Her given name was Catherine Florence and never went by the name Kate. Funny how these things evolve.
The reason I said ‘shacked up’ as Henry John was never divorced from Harriet and only married Eliza in 1910 after having 5 children. Harriet died in Portsmouth in 1906. I’m guessing they got wind of her death and figured the coast was clear. If you look at the 1911 census, the ‘years married’ column is very smudged out. Guess a quick change of mind as to how long the marriage actually was.
So by now it’s evident that all of my gran’s brothers and sisters were born out of wedlock. Shock! The last child, Dorothy was born in 1908, and the marriage was in 1910. Hmmmm….
I contacted Barnardo’s and received some interesting info about Henry James’s time in Canada. He was sent to a boys home for about 3 years, and then shipped to Canada. He returned to London, did a stint in the army, got married and had two daughters. He settled in Portsmouth where his entire family died from a bomb hitting his house in 1941.
After Harriet passed away in 1906, her daughter emigrated to the US and settled in New York City. She married an English fellow named Dickinson. I have been in touch with that branch of the family. It was intimated to me that she never spoke about her childhood and was fond of telling ‘tall tales’, I’m guessing much like her father Henry John senior.
I researched the deaths of Henry John 1921 and Eliza 1946, and they were both buried in paupers graves in south London. Very sad as they both had children who lived locally at the time."
