- Alfred's birth was confirmed in a letter to Katherine Chaveli. He was born at 6 Chatham Row, Walcot, Bath. Baptised the son of Edward and Sarah Semper of 6 Chatham Row; trunk maker.
1861 census: Alfred (24, postman born Bath, Somerset) was living with brother William (30) at 14 Great Carlish Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex).
1871 census: at 28a Manchester Street, Marylebone, London (all SEMPER), Alfred (33, sorter in Post Office, born Bath, Somerset), Jane A (34, born Marylebone), Kate (8, scholar, born Marylebone), Alfred (6, scholar, born Marylebone), Annie (3, scholar, born Marylebone) and Adelaide (1, born Marylebone).
