HOUSTON -- Services for A.J. Minter, 73, Houston, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Second Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 8, 1926, in Ardmore to Willard and Mae Minter, Minter, known as "Apple Jack," died July 7, 2000, in a local hospital. Minter earned his bachelor's degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and also attended the University of Oklahoma. He was the owner and operator of seven different businesses ranging from the food industry to accounting, including American Plating Co. of Texas.
He was a member of the National Association of Metal Finishers, the Texas Association of Metal Finishers and the Petroleum Club. In Oklahoma, he was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Lodge and Rotary Club in Duncan.
In 1983, Minter was inducted into the Conoco AAU Hall of Fame for playing with Halliburton Cementers from 1950-55. He received the award for longest shot at 68 feet.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Minter, Houston; a daughter, Alyson Chensasky, Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Gary Allen, Sugarland, Texas, and Steve Patrick, Houston; a brother, James Kirby, Duncan; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elbert Earl, on Jan. 17, 1973.
Bearers will be Jim Hayes, Jack Manning, Frank Vetter, Nick Knutson, Ed Hansen and Charles Giammalva. Honorary bearers are Glen Slaven, Jim Miller, Carl Schmidt, Willard Langley, Sammy Giammalva, Fred Ferguson, Ciro Lampasas, Stan Kalsizewski, Brett Rice and Michael Palmara.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
