Notes |
- Raymond Killick has Caroline Bertha's surname as BROWN or BROWNE but she appears in the NZ BMD index as CAMPBELL. A later email from Raymond says that Caroline was the widow of John CAMPBELL.
The NZ BMD index entry for Caroline's death gives her name as Caroline Barker KILLICK.
July 2017: Raymond Killick writes:
"Caroline Bertha Browne [ ] had a son from her first marriage to John Campbell. John died when he was thrown from his horse. Their son was Norman Campbell. We visited them often, when I was a child. Norman's wife was a Clayton. We knew them as Uncle Norman (Cecil Killick's half brother), and Aunty Jessie. After Norman Campbell died, Jessie moved with her sister, Lucy Upchurch, back to Lucy's home in Launceston, Tasmania."
March 2020: more information from Raymond Killick:

Bertha's first husband John Campbell died, after a horse riding accident.(aged 37). Their only child was Norman Thomas Campbell, born 27.08.1882 in Darlinghurst Sydney (known to me as Uncle Norman). He was a much loved step brother of Nina, Cecil and Ivy. Ivy was born in Australia.
Bertha was the 5th of 9 children (I have their details). She arrived in Sydney aboard the Cypheres with her older sister Dorothy Alice Browne (known as Alice).
[Per the Trove website, the arrival of the SS Cyphrenes at Adelaide was reported in the Express & Telegraph of Adelaide on 13 August 1879. The ship had left London on 27 June and Plymouth on 29 June. Alice Browne and Bertha Brown were among the Saloon passengers.]
Bertha & son Norman sailed after her husbands death to New Zealand on the ship Aorangi on 24.06.1885

 | Caroline Bertha Killick nee Browne 1855 - 1902 Raymond Killick writes (July 2025):
"My Wife and I visited New Zealand and we visited Caroline Berth Killick Nee Browne & Henry Norman Killick's grave site, in Mercer, for the first time.
The gravesite was in a very bad state, in danger of completely falling in!
The surrounding railings were in good repair.
The headstone vandalised and broken in several pieces. I managed to reassemble the broken pieces, and lay them together flat on the top. No headstone for Henry Norman, but I had it in authority from the late Jim Stevenson (a second cousin previously unknown to me and shared great grandfather of HNK), that he was placed in the same grave."
The photo on the left appears at findagrave.com and shows the grave in disrepair. The right-hand photo includes Raymond inspecting his handiwork. |
