| Notes |
- Marriage said to have taken place in 1881 but no trace in that year of a marriage under Minter or under PETTIT, PETTITT, PETTITE, PELTILE or PETTILE.
There is no trace either of the registration of the births of Frederick's 3 children.
1891 census: MINTER family living in Butley, Suffolk, comprising Frederick, 35, wife Mary Ann, 44, daughters Louisa, 10, and Sarahann, 8, and son Harry or Henry, 7. Frederick's father John, 54, staying with them.
1901 census: the following family, surely the same one as the 1891 family mentioned above, was living in Boyton:
- Frederick CHAMBERS, Head, 45, b. Boyton
- Mary Ann CHAMBERS, Wife, 54, b. Boyton
- Louisa MIDDLEDITCH, Daughter(IN), 20, single, b. Boyton
- Henry CHAMBERS, Son, 17, b. Boyton
- Elizabeth PETTITE [?], Mother-in-law, 79, widow, b. Hollesley
The answer to these riddles is probably as follows, although why Frederick chose to hop between MINTER and CHAMBERS is a mystery:
Frederick's parents were apparently married on 23 March 1856. In 1891 Frederick gave his age as 35, and in 1901 as 45. If he was born on 18 May 1856 he would not have reached 35 by 5 April 1891 (when the 1891 census was officially taken). It's therefore possible that he was born before his parents were married and given the name CHAMBERS, although there's no trace of his birth registration under CHAMBERS between Q1 1855 and Q2 1856. THE IGI does not help.
Frederick married Mary Ann MIDDLEDITCH in 1881 (Q4 1881, Woodbridge 4a/1471): Mary Ann PETTITT had been married to Robert MIDDLEDITCH since 1870 (Q2 1870 Woodbridge 4a/891) and appears with him (aged 21, born Boyton) and a son, William J. (aged 7 months, b. Boyton) on the 1871 census (William J(ohn) died aged 2 in Q4 1872 (Woodbridge 4a/395). The death at age 32 of a Robert MIDDLEDITCH was registered in Q2 1881 (Woodbridge 4a/432) - this may well have been Mary Ann's husband, since his age was given in the 1871 census as 21. Louisa MIDDLEDITCH (as she was in the 1901 census) must have been born shortly before her father died. She may(or may not) have been the Louisa Jane MIDDLEDITCH registered in Q2 1881(Woodbridge 4a/770), apparently twin of Mabel Jessie MIDDLEDITCH, who shared the same registration number. There is no indication of what became of Mabel - no trace on 1891 or 1901 censuses and no trace of death between Q2 1881 and Q3 1882 (she may have died after that but no trace on FreeBMD).
Frederick married Mary Ann under the name CHAMBERS, in Q4 1881 (Woodbridge 4a/1471).
Having married under the name of CHAMBERS, I suspect that his and Mary Ann's children were registered as CHAMBERS. These are probably them:
- Sarah Ann CHAMBERS, b. Q1 1883 (Woodbridge 4a/816)
- Henry William CHAMBERS, b. Q2 1884 (Woodbridge 4a/308)
These two children appear in the 1911 census:
1911 census: at Prospect Cottage, Boyton, Nr Woodbridge (4 rooms) (all CHAMBERS, all born Boyton), Frederick William (head, 55, married, horseman on farm), Mary Ann (wife, 63, married 29 years, 6 children of whom 3 still living), Sarah Ann (daughter, 28, single, mothers help) and Henry William (son, 27, single, labourer on farm). Also Dorothy Alice HAMBLING (grand daughter, 4, born Boyton).
