Notes	Privately baptised. The fact that on the 1851 census Samuel's birthplace is shown as Eye, Suffolk casts a small amount of doubt over whether that Samuel was the one born in Eyke in 1795. However there is no doubt that the subject of the 1861 census is the same person as the subject of the 1851 census, and in 1861 Samuel's birthplace is shown as Eyke. For that reason the subject of the 1851 and 1861 censuses is assumed to be Samuel born in 1795 of William and Elizabeth (Johnson). 1841 census: in Handford Road, Ipswich St Peter, Suffolk, Samuel (45, carpenter), Sarah (35), Caroline (15), Sarah (10), Elizabeth (8), William (6) and John (3). 1851 census: in St Georges St, Ipswich St Matthew, Samuel (55, carpenter journeyman), Sarah (48), Caroline (24, tambour worker), Elizabeth (18, dress maker), William (16, brokers porter), John (13, scholar), Samuel (9, scholar) and Elizabeth C (1). Elizabeth C is shown as daughter but it's unlikely that Samuel's wife Sarah was the mother since she would have been about 48 when Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth's true identity is a mystery . Her birth certificate might help: it seems likely that her birth was that registered in Q1 1850 at Ipswich (12/395) as Elizabeth Clara Bagett Baggett. No trace of her has been found in the 1861 or 1871 censuses but she reappeared in 1874 when, was Elizabeth Clara Bagget Minter, she married John Best NEWTON, giving her father as Edward Bagget Minter (deceased), gentleman. In his Minter Story of June 2012, Graham Minter speculates that Elizabeth may have been the illegitimate daughter of Caroline or Elizabeth Maria Minter. 1861 census: in Norwich Road, Ipswich St Matthew, Samuel (65, carpenter), Sarah H (58) and Samuel (19, plumber & glazier). 1871 census: in Balkerne Hill, St Peter, Colchester, Essex, Sarah (widow, 68, annuitant) and Samuel (28, plumber &c). 1881 census (indexed as WINTER by ancestry.com): at 3 Beaufort Street, Ipswich St Matthew, Sarah (widow, 78, annuitant) and a lodger, Georgiana DUNN (widow, 74, born Westminster). 1891 census (indexed as MONTEZ by ancestry.com): at 52 Johnt Street, Ipswich St Clement, Sarah Harlow (widow, 89) with her son-in-law Alfred WARREN (57, brewers servant, born Bramford, Suffolk) and daughter Caroline (64). Graham Minter has a copy of Samuel's death certificate which shows the cause of death as bronchitis.
