    Notes
    • Henry was a late witness (swearing an oath in January 1826) to his brother Robert's 1823 Will.

There is a certain amount of doubt about Henry's marriages but it would seem that he married twice. It's thought that the first marriage took place in 1802 in Monkton, Kent to Elizabeth ELGAR of Monkton, a marriage which seems to have produced no children*. Henry's second marriage may be the one which took place on 13 February 1817, to Elizabeth KINGSHOTT at St Martin in the Fields, Westminter.

      * this may not be true: on 14 October 1807 a Sarah Minter was born, and baptised on 4 December 1808 as daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Minter; and on 3 November 1811 a Henry Minter, born 2 June 1811, son of Henry and Elizabeth Minter, was baptised in a Wesleyan Methodist chapel in London. These appear in findmypast's collection of non-conformist baptisms (June 2014) with no indication of which chapel was involved. I've found no other trace of either Sarah or Henry. A further baptism, of Thomas Minter, son of Henry & Elizabeth Minter, took place on 3 October 1813 - he was born on 13 June 1813

Interestingly, the banns for Henry's marriage to Elizabeth Elgar were published at Christ Church, Southwark, London on 25 April, 2 May and 9 May 1802:
'Banns of marriage between Henry Minter of this Parish, Bacr. and Elizth. Elgar of the Parish of Monkton in the County of Kent Spinster'.

June 2010: publication of Non-conformist registers by Ancestry.co.uk reveals that Henry and Elizabeth had a number of children baptised at Great Queen Street Chapel, Lincolns Inn Fields, London between 1823 and 1834:
      Martha 15 Jan 1823
      Henry 16 Apr 1824
      Sarah 4 Sep 1825
      Emma 24 Mar 1829
      Charles 20 Sep 1830
      Thomas 24 Mar 1833
      Caroline 29 Oct 1834
All were in my list of Henry and Elizabeth's children but my list also includes Phoebe (1830).

1841 census: at 4 Water Lane, St Dunstans, London, Henry (60, oil & colourman), Elizabeth (45), Martha (15, flat ironer), Henry (15, apprentice), Emma (12), Phoebe (10) and Caroline (6). All born 'in county'.

1851 census (indexed as MENTER by ancestry.com): at 41 Whitefriars Street, St Bride, London, Henry (73, widower, oil & colourman), Eliza (daughter, 34), Henry William (26, oil & colourman), Emma (22, milliner), Phoebe (20, dealer in fancy goods), Caroline (16) and granddaughter Elizabeth HOWELL (9, born St Lukes, Middlesex). Elizabeth HOWELL would have been Henry's daughter Mary Ann's daughter.

London, England, Land Tax Records, 1692-1932 at Ancestry.com lists Henry Minter as the occupier of a house in Water Lane owned by Mr Baker, who was assessed for Land Tax of £2 12s 6d in 1831 rising to £2 19s 6d by 1843. By 1849 Water Lane had become Whitefriars Street, the landlord was now Mr Parker and the Land Tax had reduced to £2 16s. The same tax was payable in 1857 by which time Henry's son had taken over the business. By 1866 the house had acquired a number, 41, the owner was now Mr E Aulds and the tax remained at £2 16s.

Henry appeared in a number of London Directories:
1840 Robson's Commercial Directory: H Minter, oil & colorman, 4 Water Lane, Fleet Street.
1845 London Directory: Henry Minter, oil & color, 4 Water Lane, Fleet Street.
1852, 1853, 1854 Post Office Directory: Henry Minter, oil & colorman, 41 Whitefriars Street, Fleet Street.

Henry appeared in London Electoral Registers (source London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965 at Ancestry.com):
1835, 1837, St Dunstan in the West, Farringdon Without, Henry Minter, house, Water Lane.
1855: Farringdon Without - South Side, Henry Minter, house, 41 Whitefriars Street.

Sussex Advertiser 24 October 1854: Minter - October 18, 32, High-street, Hastings, Mr. Henry Minter, formerly of London, in his 77th year.

Henry's Will is dated 5 December 1853, by which date he was a widower. In the Will his only son Henry William inherits the business at Whitefriars Street and his six daughters are provided for.

It would seem that Henry was buried at All Saints, Hastings. The following Monumental Inscription was found at www.outer-chaos.net/ashasti.txt (February 2009):
652H.S. (all Roman caps.): In Memory of Henry Minter who
departed this life Octr 18th 1854 Aged 77. Also Martha
