    • At the baptisms of all his children John was described as a mariner of Wivenhoe. He doesn't appear in the 1841 and 1851 census entries:

      1841 census: in Anchor Hill, Wivenhoe (all HOWLING), Ann (54), Mary (16), Elizabeth (11) and William (17, mariner). All born Essex.

      1851 census: in High Street, Wivenhoe, Ann HOWLING (64, mariners wife, born Bocking, Essex), Mary COLLIER (daughter, 26, shipwrights wife, born Wivenhoe) and Elizabeth HOWLING (22, straw bonnet maker, born Wivenhoe).

      By 1861 John was a widower.

      1861 census: in Anglesea Road, Elmstead, Essex, John HOWLING (head, widower, 76, mariner, born Wivenhoe), Mary A COLLIER (daughter, 36, born Wivenhoe) and Elizabeth H COLLIER (granddaughter, 9, born Wivenhoe).
