| Notes |
- 1861 Census: in Billy Well Lane, Batley, Yorkshire (all HEPWORTH), John (head, 22, woollen weaver, born Batley), Sarah (wife, 21, born Honley, Yorks) and Clara (daughter, 1, born Batley).
1871 Census: in Mill Lane, Batley, Yorkshire (all HEPWORTH), John (head, 32, woollen weaver, born Batley), Sarah (wife, 31, born Honley, Yorks), Clara E (daughter, 11, scholar, born Batley), Ernest (son, 6, scholar, born Batley), Herbert (son, 3, born Batley) and Esther H (daughter, 6 months, born Batley).
Glenys Parton has information showing that the Hepworth family emigrated to Perth, Australia when Clara was 15 years old. The family left London Docks on 27 May 1875 on the sailing ship "Daylight", clearing Gravesend on 29 May 1875. The ship dropped anchor off Fremantle, Western Australia on 28 August 1875. The following day passengers were told they would be taken to Perth by steamer.
A document "1875 Voyage of the Ship "Daylight" to Western Australia" explaining the background to the voyage is on the Minter Exchange website. Further details can be found at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hepworth-38.
Western Australia may not have been to the Hepworth family's liking and the family returned to England in 1879. Those returning included Clara whose marriage may have ended in the death or divorce of her husband Daniel HEALEY. (It hasn't been possible to establish what became of Daniel). Clara was pregnant when she left Australia and her daughter Ada Constance Bush HEALEY was born back in Bately, Yorkshire.
1881 Census: in Russell Street, Batley, Yorkshire (all HEPWORTH apart from Clara and her daughter), Sarah (head, married, 41, born Honley, Yorks), Clara E HEALEY (daughter, married, 31, woollen power loom weaver, born Batley), Ernest (son, 16, warehouse boy, born Batley), Herbert (son, 13, scholar, born Batley), Esthels(?) H (daughter, 10, scholar, born Batley), Elizabeth (daughter, 8, scholar, born Batley), Raymond (son, 6, scholar, born Batley), Florence G (daughter, 4, born Australia) and Ada Constance B HEALEY (granddaughter, 1, born Batley).

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz has a copy of the news article (originally printed in The Lyttleton Times) which announced the arrival at the Port of Lyttleton on 22 March 1883 of the ship Crusader, 1225 tons, from London via Plymouth. Among the passengers were Mr and Mrs HEPWORTH and family (6).
This trip was for assisted emigration. It left for Canterbury, NZ on 16 December 1882 and arrived on 22 March 1883. A copy of the list of passengers has the following details of the HEPWORTH family. The original is at familysearch.org. All HEPWORTH, from Yorks:
John 44, weaver
Sarah 43
Elizabeth 10
Raymond 8
Florence 5
The following appears in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Wellington Provincial District], reproduced at https://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz:
" Hepworth, John, Eclectic Medical Herbalist Specialist in the treatment of Organic diseases, The Square, Palmerston North. Telegraphic address, “Hepworth, Palmerston North.” Private residence, Church Street. Mr. Hepworth is a native of Yorkshire, England, and arrived in this Colony in 1883, per ship “Crusader,” from London. He studied under Dr. Skelton, of Leeds and was for some twelve years in business in Batley, Yorkshire. Mr. Hepworth dispenses all his own medicines, and has, of course, a large number of proprietary articles, all of which have proved most valuable for the particular diseases for the cure of which they have been compounded. He is agent for Neill, of Dunedin whose herbal preparations are known throughout the world. Mr Hepworth has a good shop, conveniently situated within a few doors of the Club Hotel, and his private house is but a few yards away, thus enabling him to attend to urgent cases with the least possible delay."
