| Notes |
- Ancestry.com.au - UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 has:
arriving on 29 April 1958 at Liverpool from Montreal on the 'Empress of Britain', May C Minter, born 5 May 1887, housewife and Margaret Minter, born 28 May 1914, clerk. Address Straight Rd, Boxted, Essex. Both shown as Canadian citizens.
The death record at FamilySearch shows May's name as May Coveny Minter, parents as Charles and Ellen NEVARD.
May's ancestry seems somewhat complicated: as noted above, her parents were said to be Charles and Ellen NEVARD. Charles NEVARD married Ellen COVENEY in Q2 1891 (Rochford 4a/564). However, May's birth was probably that registered as May Coveney CARPENTER in Q3 1887 (Rochford 4a/423). Further details are below:
The 1851 census has, in North Farmbridge, Essex: Ephriam CARPENTER (haed, 31, ag lab, born Cressing(?), Essex), Susan CARPENTER (wife, 24, born Woodham ---(?)) and Sarah Ann OLIVER (daughter, 5, born Maldon, Essex).
- the marriage of Ephraim CARPENTER and Susan OLIVER was registered in Q4 1850 at Maldon (12/305). The birth of Sarah Ann OLIVER was registered at Maldon in Q2 1846 (12/167). There is an 1841 census entry for Susan OLIVER, aged 13, in North Farmbridge, so it looks as if Sarah Ann OLIVER was her daughter, born illegitimately.
The 1861 census of North Farmbridge has: Ephraim CARPENTER (haed, 40, ag lab, born Ch----, Essex), Susan CARPENTER (wife, 37, born Woodham Ferrers, Essex), Sarah A Carpenter (daughter, 15, born Maldon, Essex), Charles CARPENTER (son, 4, born North Farmbridge), Elizabeth CARPENTER (daughter, 11 months, born North Farmbridge) and Hannah OLIVER (sister in law, unmarried, 24, born North Farmbridge).
- Ephraim CARPENTER's death at age 50 was registered at Maldon in Q4 1866 (4a/139).
The 1871 census of North Farmbridge has: Susan CARPENTER (head, widow, 45. formerly labourer's wife, born Woodham Ferrers, Essex), Charles CARPENTER (son, 13, labourer, born North Farmbridge), Elizabeth CARPENTER (daughter, 10, scholar, born North Farmbridge) and Ellen CARPENTER (daughter, 6, scholar, born North Farmbridge).
By the time of the 1881 census, Ellen CARPENTER, now 16, had left home and was a general servant in East Street, Prittlewell, Essex, home of Louisa BELL an annuitant.
- Ellen's mother Susan married again, to Charles TYLER, registered at Rochford in Q4 1882 (4a/524)
The 1891 census of Prittlewell, Essex has: Charles TYLER (head, 60 or 66, general labourer, born Sittingbourne, Kent), Susan TYLER (wife, 65, born North Farmbridge, Essex), Ellen COALNEY [it looks like] (daughter, married, 26, born North Farmbridge), Willie CARPENTER (grandson, 6, born Purleigh, Essex) and May CARPENTER (granddaughter, 4, born Prittlewell). Also there as a boarder was Charles NEVARD (23, bricklayer, born Lexden), shortly to marry Ellen.
- although Ellen was shown as married in the 1891 census, I can't find a marriage and her children were registered as William Charles CARPENTER (Q3 1884 Maldon 4a/422) and May Coveny CARPENTER (Q3 1887, Rochford 4a/423). They were probably both illegitimate.
- shortly after the 1891 census, in Q2 1891 (Rochford 4a/564), as Ellen COVENEY, Ellen married Charles NEVARD
1901 census: at 28 Bergholt Road, St Pauls Colchester, Charles Hy. NEVARD (head, 31, bricklayer, born Lexden), Ellen NEVARD (wife, 35, born Farmbridge), May NEVARD (daughter, 13, born Southend on Sea), Ellen Maud NEVARD (daughter (9, bron Lexden), Lilian Louise NEVARD (daughter, 7, born Lexden), Daisy E NEVARD (3, born Lexden) and William NEVARD (8 months, born Colchester).
- as can be seen, May had become May NEVARD. Ellen's son Willie stayed in Prittlewell and appears as William CARPENTER (16, carman, born Purleigh, Essex), boarding with William SMITH (5&), whose housekeeper was Emily OLIVER (single, 34, born Maldon), possibly a relative of Susan CARPENTER nee OLIVER.
