| Notes |
- 1841 census: in Manton, Lincs (all Hunsley, all born in Lincs), John (70, farmer). Will (40), Elizath. 40), Priscilla (13), John (10), Matilda (7) and Thos. (2). Also Jane QUIBLE or QUIBILE, 20, female servant). Could this Jane be she who married George Hunsley in 1848 and went to America with him in 1850? I certainly can't find her in the 1851 UK census.
1851 census: in Manton, Lincs (indexed as KINSLEY by Ancestry) (all HUNSLEY except servants), John (head, widower, 85, farmer of 900 acres employing 2 labourers and 2 boys, born Scawby), Elizabeth (daughter [in law], widow, 51, born Manton), Priscilla (granddaughter, single, 22, born Manton), John (grandson, single, 20, born Manton), Matilda (granddaughter, 16, born Manton), Thomas (grandson, 11, born Manton) and Celina (granddaughter, 9, born Manton). Also two farm labourers Samuel HANNA (15) and Thomas HANNA (20) both born Saxby, Lincs.
This John Hunsley could be the person referred to in the following Wikipedia article:
«b»John Hunsley«/b» was a bagpiper from Manton, North Lincolnshire and last known player of the Lincolnshire bagpipes, which he played until shortly before his death at around 1850.
Hunsley's music was described as unrefined, or "unmelodious", but popular amongst his peers. Hunsley was known to play for riotous parties where guests "danced until the brick dust came through the soles of their feet." One commentator noted that Hunsley's bagpipe was "little more than the Oaten Pipe improved with a bag." Organologist Anthony Baines notes that Hunsley used to send his pipes to be "tuned" in Edinburgh. Another reference claimed that he took the pipes himself, on a white pony. The same authority recorded that he was a champion boxer and wrestler, defeated only once in his life.
