| Notes |
- Clara E(mma) WESTERN lived in 1871 and 1881 with her parents William and Harriett Western. She was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire.
February 2013. Research into the George DOWNEY who until now has been listed as one of Charles Frederick DOWNEY and Clara's sons even though he was born about 1889, before they were married, has led me to conclude that Clara was in fact married to a Charles BALDING for a short while. The details are:
Clara married Charles Henry BALDING in Q1 1888 at Doncaster RD.
They registered a son George Henry BALDING at Doncaster RD in Q4 1888.
I think Charles Henry BALDING was the son of William and Rose BALDING and that his birth is the one registered in Q1 1866 at Glanford Brigg as "Male" BALDING.
I haven't been able to find anything relating to an annulment or divorce between Clara and Charles Henry but I think the following is highly relevant. It's extracted from "West Yorkshire, England, Prison Records, 1801-1914" at ancestry.com:
Convicted at Doncaster on 7 June 1890, Charles H BALDING, aged 24, farm labourer, born Messingham, Lincs - assaulting Clara BALDING, sentenced to 1 month hard labour or a fine of £2 16s 7d. Since the record is of people in Wakefield Prison, it would seem that Charles served time rather than pay the fine.
The case was reported in the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent on 9 June 1890 - Colin Stewart has provided a clipping which is attached to Charles Henry Balding's record on Minter Exchange.
Charles Henry BALDING's family has been expanded upon - see William BALDING, born c. 1832.
There are two 1891 census entries which suggest Clara and Charles had split up before the census took place:
1. At the Cross Keys Hotel, Crowle, Lincs was Clara E BALDIN (sic), 22, status unclear but could be widow, born "Methesingham" [probably Messingham which is in Lincolnshire].
2. at 19 Gordon Street, Doncaster, staying with his grandparents William and Harriett WESTERN, was George BALDWIN (sic) (grandson, 2, born Mexbro [Mexborough]).
As a result of all this I've added a first husband for Clara and have moved George DOWNEY who now becomes George Henry BALDING.
