| Notes |
- No trace of the registration of the births of any of John and Elizabeth's first 4 children.
1861 census: John and Elizabeth living in Boyton with daughter Elizabeth, 1. Their son Frederick William, 5, was staying in Boyton with his grandparents James CHAMBERS (67, born Capel, Suffolk) and Rachael CHAMBERS (66, born Sutton, Suffolk) and their son Daniel, 30. Daughter Mary Ann, 4, was staying with her aunt and uncle Sarah and Robert BURCH/BIRCH, where she remained until after her marriage in 1879. It's probable that son John died since another John was born in 1862.
1871 census: John and Elizabeth living in Hoo, in Kent with son John, 8, born Boyton. This cannot be the same John as the one said to have been born in 1858 - more likely to be the John whose birth was registered in Q2 1862 at Woodbridge (4a/634). John and Elizabeth's son Frederick, 15, was living with his grandparents William and Elizabeth in Boyton.
1881 census: John, 45, now (said to be) a widower, lodging with his brother-in-law Henry GILLESPIE and John's sister (Henry GILLESPIE's wife) Maryann (sic) and their niece Jane E. ARCHER, married, 20, in Boyton. No trace in BMD death index of John's wife's death in the 1870s (see below).
1891 census: John, 54, still (said to be) a widower, staying with his son Frederick and his family in Butley.
August 2009. It appears that John Minter's marriage with Elizabeth broke down some time in the 1870s. Although in 1881 and 1891 John described himself as a widower, what seems to have happened is that, probably while he and Elizabeth were in Kent, Elizabeth began living with Henry GARDINER (the spelling varies). The following census entries show this quite clearly. Henry and Elizabeth consistently said they were husband and wife but no trace of a marriage has been found.
1881 census: at 4 Spring Terrace, Dartford, Kent, Henry GARDNER (head, married, 42, painter, born Yalding, Kent), Elizabeth GARDNER (wife, married, 35 (sic), born Boyton, Suffolk), John GARDNER (son, 19, labourer, born Boyton, Suffolk), George GARDNER (son, 6, scholar, born Dartford, Kent) and Emily GARDNER (daughter, 4, born Dartford, Kent).
1891 census: at 32 Heath Street, Dartford, Kent, Henry GARDINER (head, married, 52, house painter, born Yalding, Kent), Elizabeth GARDINER (wife, married, 53, dressmaker, born Woodbridge, Suffolk), John M GARDINER (son, 28, scavenger, born Woodbridge, Suffolk), George H GARDINER (son, 16, laborer, born Dartford, Kent) and Emily GARDINER (daughter, 14, born Dartford, Kent).
1901 census: at 32 Heath Street, Dartford, Kent, Henry GARDENER (head, married, 62, painter (own a/c, born Moulston(?), Kent), Elizabeth GARDENER (wife, married, 63, born Woodbridge, Suffolk), John Minter GARDENER (son, 36, scavenger (urban council, born Woodbridge, Suffolk), George Henry GARDENER (son, 27, painter, born Dartford, Kent) and Emily GARDENER (daughter, 24, general servant (dom), born Dartford, Kent).
Henry GARDINER's death at age 70 was registered at Dartford in 1908.
1911 census (taken only from the index): in the Dartford census district, Elizabeth GARDINER (75) and John GARDINER (48).
Elizabeth died in 1912, aged 75: her death was registered at Dartford under the name Elizabeth GARDINER. Her son John appears not to have married; he died in Q1 1946 and his death was registered at Dartford as John MINTER.
It's not known what became of Mary Ann Minter. Elizabeth Jane Minter married .Frederick Theodore ARCHER in 1881 - for some reason the marriage was registered as Jane Elizabeth Minter.
