    • Lydia Freeman on Genes Reunited is descended from Charles & Eliza's family.

      Admitted as a freeman of Canterbury as a labourer on 9 July 1849 by copy of his father.

      1851 census: no trace.
      1861 census: no trace.

      The inclusion of Eliza Maria as a child of Charles and Eliza is justified by her being the first-born girl, and thus called Eliza after her mother, and the fact that her birth was registered at St Asaph, Wales, as were later children. The 1861 census would confirm this but cannot be found.

      1871 census (indexed as MINSTER): in Georgeham Village, Devon, Charles (44, coast guard), Eliza (32), William (11, scholar), Julia (9, scholar), Sarah (7, scholar), Charles (5, scholar) and Henry (2). Daughter Eliza (12, born Wales) was a scholar at the 'Belle Vue House College', Parade, Herne, Kent.

      Charles appears in the Index to ADM 175/59, Coast Guard Book of Persons Serving Onshore HMS Coast Guard Ship "Caledonia", Liverpool District, 1 July 1873 to 13 July 1877. Original of list is in the National Archives.

      1881 census: at 9 John Street, South Shoebury, Essex, Charles (54, general labourer), Eliza (42), Julia (18, domestic servant), Charles (14, general labourer), Harriett (8, scholar), Richard (7, scholar), Arthur (4, scholar) and Lily (2).

      1891 census: in John Street, South Shoebury, Charles (65, naval pensioner), Eliza (54), William (31, platelayer), Charles (25, seaman), Arthur (15, brickmaker) and Walter (10, scholar).

      1901 census: in Friars Street, South Shoebury, Eliza (widow, 62) and Walter (19, railway engine fireman). On the same page, at Leinster Villas, Wakering Avenue, South Shoebury, were William J (40, railway storekeeper) and his wife Eliza (40). Also on the same page are Harriet Dray and her three children: Harriet was Eliza's daughter and William J's sister.
