| Notes |
- From Janet Minter, September 2008:
"Ethel was born in West Horton England around 1904/1906.She immigrated to Australia in 1914 aged 8 years with her parents [James Thomas Hewlett and Margaret Hewlett nee Caldwell] and brother Thomas who was aged 5 years.
Marriage Certificate gives Ethel's occupation as a machinist. Reg was listed as a labourer and later a carter. Ethel left her home in High Street New Lambton around 1945 leaving Reg to raise 8 children. She died in Lismore N.S.W. in the 1990's."
Added note by John Minter: I haven't been able to find the marriage of James Thomas Hewlett and Margaret Caldwell. Two birth registrations would tie up with the ages shown above:
Ethel Hewlett Q1 1905 Bolton 8c/475
Thomas Hewlett Q3 1908 Bolton 8c/446
The Bolton registration district covered a place call Westhoughton - c/f West Horton above.
May 2023: further notes clarifying the above.
(1) It seems that Ethel's mother's maiden name was HILTON, not Caldwell. I've now found her marriage to James Thomas Hewlett, and Hilton is the mother's maiden name shown on her childrens' birth registration index entries.
(2) Ancestry.com have a shipping record (at Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839-1923) showing that Margaret Hewlett (32), and children Alce (9), Ethel (8) and Thomas (5) were among the passengers who left London for Australia on the 'Miltiades', arriving at Melbourne on 18 April 1914.
It's possible that Ethel's father, James Thomas Hewlett, was the James Hewlett who was on the 'Omrah' from London to Australia, arriving at Sydney on 16 January 1913 (Ancestry.com, New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922).
April 2024: Jim Minter, in relation to the above, emails me to say "I did some research some years ago to find that it appears that Margaret's parents were not married at her birth. This maybe [explains] the differences in her surname.
Yes it was James coming to Australia a year or so before Margaret and the 3 children. He came first to get work and house.
I have some details of BDM of Alice & Thomas if you require [them]."
March 2025: Jim Minter writes that Ethel left her family (husband Reginald Morphew Minter and eight children) in 1947/8 and went to live in Lismore, NSW with Frederick Brightman, whose first wife died in 1961. Frederick and Ethel had a daughter, Linda Beverley Brightman, in 1948, and married in 1967. Details of Ethel's appearances in Electoral Rolls can be found (a) up to 1943 in Reginald Morphew Minter's Notes and (b) from 1954 to 1980 in Frederick Brightman's Notes.
