- Note by Clifton Minter:
"Margaret's brother, William Cary's civil war pension application states that he was born in Clark Co. Ga in 1845. I assume that Margaret was born there also since the 1870 and 1880 census of Clay co. AL both show her born in GA.
Margaret's husband John Died in 1912. Grace Minter Thorpe told me that she (Margaret) was living with her family in the early 1920's when a son came from Detroit, Mich. and took her home with them. She was not heard of after that. The descendants of William Cary Minter claim to have a letter that Margaret wrote to William in the 1930's and that she visited him in Texas before his death in 1934."
1880 United States Federal Census: in Ashland, Clay, Alabama, John W KNOWLES (5-, farmer, born Georgia), Margarett KNOWLES (31, wife, keeping house, born Georgia), Sarah MINTER (75, mother in law, born Georgia), Martha H MINTER (37, sister in law, assisting keeping house, born Georgia) and Fred CAMPBELL (22, farm laborer).
