| Notes |
- It seems that William married three times. His first wife was Anna MORRISON, whom he married in 1866. Despite extensive searching, I can't find William in the 1870 US census, which should show Anna and at least one child, William born 1867.
The second marriage was to Mary A GOODALE, who was born in Rollinsford, New Hampshire; it took place on 29 April 1876 in Lynn, Massachusetts (see the Marriage notes for full details).
The third marriage appears to have been to another Mary, but Mary E rather than Mary A. I cannot find any details of this marriage but the 1880 census indicates that Mary E was born in Ireland.
Also missing is any indication of when and where the first two wives died.
I have had to guess who was the mother of William's children, as follows:
William (born about 1867) - Anna
Frank and Bernard (both born about 1874) - Anna
Mary A (born about 1877) and Joseph (born about 1883) - Mary E
The following 1880 census record probably refers to William H BUKER, although the surname on the census page looks more like BAKER than BUKER. The age of the wife, Mary, tallies with the 1900 census entry recorded in William CORR's Notes.
1880 US Federal Census: in State Street, New York City, William (36, engineer, born Maine), Mary (26, wife, keeps house, born Ireland), William (13, son, attends school, born New York), Frank (6, son, born New York) and Mary (3, daughter, born New York),
Joyce Corr has sent me a copy of a certificate dated 3 January 1871 granting a patent to "William H Buker of Johnstown, New York". The patent was for "a new and useful improvement in sewing machines". Joyce said that when her father passed away "it was in his things at Uncle Donald's home in New Jersey and I've had them ever since".
According to findagrave.com, there's a tombstone in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York which almost certainly belongs to this William H BUKER. It is inscribed as follows:
WILLIAM H. BUKER
1830 - 1881
HIS WIFE
MARY E. 1850 - 1902
MARIE E. CORR 1900 - 1900
The birth dates of William and Mary appear to be wrong. Marie E CORR must be the daughter of William and Mary's daughter Mary A BUKER, who married William CORR and had a child that had died by the time of the 1900 census.
William H BUKER died in 1881. His widow's1900 census appearances is detailed in the Notes of her son-in-law William CORR.
