      Note: Oscar's memorial shows 1898 as birth years but all other documents show 1899.

      According to his WWI military registration card, in 1918, O.J. was a telegraph operator and manager for Western Union in Plainview, TX and had been residing in Palestine, TX.

      He and Edna sailed to Havana, Cuba in May of 1930 on the SS Gov Cobb on their honeymoon. Edna, became a bookkeeper for Western Union.

      "Bo" Sexton Is Active Civic Worker; In His 30th Year In Telegraph Company Service

      Should you chance to be writing a history of the work of various civic organizations of Lubbock in the past several years. you'll probably come across a man's name that appears in the records of committee work and campaigns for membership and funds about as often as any other person in Lubbock.

      Inquire about this man and you'll discover that he's known to practically everybody in Lubbock and his personal acquaintances are numbered in all walks of life. You are told he's the manager of the local Western Union.

      Drop around to the company's office and ask for this man and you'll see a clean-cut, physically-fit young man walk up to the counter to greet you.

      He who in all probability will 'lean backwards' in politeness to you. is O. J., Sexton. just plain 'Bo' Sexton to thousands of people In Lubbock and over the South Plains.

      Known As "Bo" To Friends

      Let an acquaintance come into the office and a smile spreads over his face which often breaks into a broad grin. 'Bo' Sexton is a likeable fellow and has a host of friends.

      He has lived in Lubbock only seven short years but he takes as much in the various activities of Lubbock as if he had been here since the town was started.

      There's hardly a civic campaign for funds, membership or what have you that Sexton Isn't among the workers. Chairman of the membership of the Lubbock Kiwanis Club he Is largely responsible for the great increase in that organization's club roster.

      He is an active worker in Boy Scout activities, the Lubbock boy's Club and other similar organizations.

      Leader in Kiwanis Activities

      As Vice President of the Kiwanis Club, Sexton is a leader in that club's activities besides his membership work. He served as president of the Plainview Kiwanis Club two consecutive years during his residence in that city before moving to Lubbock.

      Sexton is a director in the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and Board of City Development. He was president of the Plainview organization while living there.

      He is an active member of the Matador club organization, which supports athletics of Texas Tech He is a Mason and a Shriner and serves as treasurer of the South Plains Shrine.

      He is a member of the Baptist Church.

      On His Thirtieth Year

      Sexton is on his thirtieth year with the telegraph company and is one of the youngest "veterans" in the company's system.

      Back in his grade school days, in Palestine, he started as a messenger boy for the company and has risen through the ranks from telegraph operator to various positions and he now holds one of the key manager-ships in Texas.

      For four years he worked with the company for $7.50 a month as a messenger boy which doesn't seem much now but in those days was pretty good pay. Messenger boys with the company now are paid thirty cents an hour for a 42-hours week.

      Born In Palestine

      Oscar James Sexton was born in Palestine, Texas, May 3 1902: one 10 children of Mr. and Mr. F. V. Sexton.

      His father was an engineer with the IGN railroad and that explains., why young Sexton became interested in the telegraph business at an early age.

      His mother still resides In the old home in Palestine and a portion of the Lubbock man's annual vacation is spent with hls mother.

      Other members of the family still living are a half-
      brother, Wilford Cooper of Houston; Franklin Sexton also of Houston; Russell Sexton also of Houston; Buddy Sexton of Washington, D.C. and Franklin Sexton of Harlingen: and sisters Mrs. Ruby Worley and Mrs. Mabel Hortman of Houston; Mrs. Clarence Bowmaster of Palestine and Mrs. Charlie Earp of Washington, D.C. His father died about two years ago.

      Telegraph Operator at 14

      Sexton's early schooling was in Palestine and after two years in Palestine High School, he went to Plainview during the war to serve as operator for the company when operators were scarce.

      Sexton. at 14, was one of the youngest telegraph operators in the state at that time.

      While at Plainview. he continued studies in high school and finished school there. Additional studies came while he served as part-time operator at College Station and attending Texas A & M and later in Draughon's Business College in Dallas.

      Returning to Plainview, he was named manager of the office there. a post he held until he moved to Lubbock In September, 1933.

      April 29, 1930, he was married to Miss Edna Minter of Plainview.

      They have two sons, Jimmy 8. a third grade student in George M. Hunt school and Bobby, 6, who is attending school for the first time this year.

      They reside at 2018 Avenue N.

      Adept In Manly Art

      During the past 15 years, Sexton has refereed more than 1,300 professional and amateur boxing matches over Texas. For three years. he was in the prize ring himself and is a great enthusiast for the manly art of self defense. He became adept in the sport in his early youth by necessity having to defend himself many times in little arguments more or less friendly, with his fellow messenger boys.

      Sexton is a leader with his messenger boys and everyone of them calls him "Mr" Sexton. He has aided many a boy to come up through the ranks like he did in the company's service and scores of the boys are now serving important posts with the company.

      Greatly interested in football, he is a constant visitor to the Tech and Westerner practice fields with his two young sons who have a great interest in the game. Sexton also likes to fish and hunt and takes the boys on frequent weekend jaunts to nearby lakes.
