| Notes |
- Per Tinch Minter, whose younger sister found a slip of printed paper, William was born at 1.30 am.
1861 census: in Bridge Street, Wickham Market, William (33, draper & grocer) and Martha (37, born Benhall).
Thanks to James Earley for finding the following.
The Ipswich Journal, and Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridge Advertiser of 13 December 1870 carried a long report of case heard at Woodbridge County Court on December 12. The plaintiff, named as John William Minter, grocer & draper of Wickham Market had brought an action against George Sadd, carpenter of Glemham. It was to recover £5. The case centred on Mr Sadd having paid Mr Minter for some clothes by giving him a £5 note drawn on Messrs Harvey's and Hudson's bank. The bank having gone bust, the note became valueless so Mr Minter was trying to get the money some other way. Argument and discussion went on at length (and this was the second hearing of the case) and in the end, the matter seems to have been unresolved since "His Honour said it was a very unimportant matter, and the parties then left the court.".
1871 census: In Bridge Street, Wickham Market, William (42, grocer &c), Martha (50, born Benhall) and nephew Thomas, 12, Ann Priscilla's son.
1881 census: at Waterloo House, Wickham Market, William (52, grocer and draper), Martha (58, born Benhall), nephew Thomas (22, grocer's assistant) and Constance M. (21, niece, housekeeper). (Constance was William's brother James's daughter).
Kelly's Directory 1883 lists William Minter, grocer & draper in Charsfield (it's not clear whether this refers to this William). The same directory lists William Minter, grocer & draper & agent for W & A Gilbey, wine & spirit merchants, in Wickham Market.
James Earley again: the Ipswich Journal reported on 6 September 1890 that William Minter applied to the Woodbridge magistrates for an additional beer license, essentially so he could sell bottled beer. After representations both for and against, the magistrates refused the application.
1891 census: in Snowdon Hill, Wickham Market, William (63, farmer and grocer), Martha (70, born Benhall), niece Constance M. (30, cook and housekeeper) and William J., 11, nephew (William's brother Henry's son).
