After serving in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II, he studied business administration at the University of Georgia in Athens and then began a career in sales and public relations. He served as Director of Commerce of the State of Georgia under Governor Ernest Vandiver and as the first Director of the Georgia Department of Industry and Trade under Governor Carl Sanders. Later he entered the real estate industry in Atlanta as a partner and broker with Summer-Minter & Associates. In 1982 he formed Country Craft Furniture Company to manufacture display equipment, and in 1986 he acquired Chattahoochee Furniture, Inc. in Flowery Branch, which manufactured furniture for the hospitality industry until it ceased operations when Jack retired in 2005.
