| Notes |
- 1861 census: at 22 Head Street, St Mary at the Walls, Colchester, Essex, (all BOWTELL), James M (26, cabinet maker, born Colchester), Amelia M (29, born Deal), Keith M* (1, born Colchester) and Alice L (4 months, born Colchester).
* shown in the birth index as Keith Miles, but more likely to have been Keith Milnes, the name of his dead uncle.
1871 census: James Mark BOWTELL (widower, 36, upholsterer) and his daughter Alice (10) were with James's brother George Golding BOWTELL, his wife and son, at 29 Holland Street, Kensington, London.
It looks as if James's wife Amelia died at the same time as her son, James Christian - their deaths appear on consecutive lines of the Q2 1863 death index page.
Son Keith hasn't been found in 1871 but re-appears in 1881.
James remarried in 1873.
1881 census: at 8 Camden Terrace, Camberwell, London (all BOWTELL), James M (46, cabinet furniture salesman, born Colchester), Ann E (37, born Armagh, Ireland), Keith M (21, ironmongers assistantborn Colchester) and Ralph J (5, born Peckham, Surrey).
