- 1861 census: Bartholomew (33, married, clerk in HM Customs) was boarding with Emma CHAPPELL and her family in Sale, Cheshire.
His wife Alice was living in a private house in Mill Lane, Folkestone with her mother (also Alice). Because her mother had married Bartholomew's father, John Minter, and she (the younger Alice) had married John's son, her mother was also her (step) mother-in-law. Also there was Alice's sister, Sarah ELGAR (18) and Bartholomew and Alice's daughter Jane (5).
Bartholomew and Alice's other two children, John (4) and Alice (1) were lodging at Foxhall Bottom, Swingfield, Kent with William FULLER (40, widower, born Swingfield).

Also present was a housekeeper, Mary A MARSH (unmarried, 32, born Alkham, Kent).
There is no sign of John in the 1881 or later censuses.
