1851 census: (supposedly) aged 36, a custom house clerk, David was living in St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.
Listed in the Post Office Directory, 1852, 1853, 1854 at Customs House under 'persons holding situations under the Crown' and in 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859 as David Minter, Custom House, Comptr of accts, London Docks.
1861 census: in Station Road, Barking, Essex, John (38, clerk in HM Customs), Rhoda (20), Jane Robinson (8, scholar), John Robinson (5, scholar), Otto (1) and David (2 months).
1871 census:at 69 Lincoln Street, Mile End, London, David (48, customs clerk), Rhoda (20), Otto (11, scholar), David (10, scholar), Albert (6, scholar), Augustus (5, scholar), Cecil (3) and Francis (1). They had a visitor, Sarah Rymill, aged 36, married dressmaker, born Barking and a servant, Annie Osborn, 18, also born Barking. Either or both of these could have been related to Rhoda, whose maiden name was Osborne (with an e) and came from Barking. Daughter Rhoda Osborne (8) was boarding in High Street, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth .

10 December 1879 Personal Estate under £450. The Will of David Minter late of Forest Gate in the County of Essex Grocer who died 27 July 1878 at Forest Gate was proved at the Principal Registry by Rhoda Minter of 7 Upland-road Peckham Rye in the County of Surrey Widow the Relict the sole Executrix.

PURSUANT to an Order of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice, made in the matter of
the estate of David Minter, deceased, and in an action Batten against Minter, the creditors of David Minter, late of Odessa-road, Forest Gate, in the county of Essex, Grocer, who died in or about the month of July, 1878, are, on or .before the 30th day of April, 1880, to send by post, prepaid, to Adam Rivers Steele, of 21, College-hill, in the.city of London, the Solicitor of the defendant, Rhoda Minter, the executrix of the deceased, their Christian and surnames, addresses and descriptions, the full particulars of their claims, a statement of their accounts, and the nature of the securities (if any) held by them, or in default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefit of the said Order. Every creditor holding any security is to produce the same before the Vice-Chancellor Sir Richard
Malins, at his chambers, situate No. 12, Staple-inn, Holborn, Middlesex, on Monday, the 10th day of May, 1880, at twelve o'clock at noon, being the time appointed for adjudicating on the claims.'97 Dated this 24th day of March, 1880.
1881 census: Rhoda (58), now a widow and 'dependent on friends' lived at 34 Somerford Grove, St John Hackney, London with her youngest son Victor P (8, scholar).
Albert (16, unemployed grocer) and Augustus (14, waiter) were lodging at 5 Piermont Road, Camberwell, London.
Cecil (13) was a boarder at the School of Emmanuel Hospital, St Margaret, Westminster.
Rhoda Osborne was an assistant in a drapers at 168 High Street, Peckham, London.
1891 census: no trace of Rhoda.
1901 census (indexed under MENTER): at 11 Roderick Road, Hampstead, London, Rhoda (58) and son Victor P (28, sign writer).
1911 census: Rhoda was living with her son Albert (qv).
