| Notes |
- Cliff Minter: Had transport business in South Africa.
1871 census: John was living with his sister Lavinia and her husband William B SHEPHERD, qv.
John evidently came back to England:
1. In 1911 a John Minter, 62, widower, steam tug boat engineman, was boarding at 41 Bow Street, Middlesbrough with John William WOOD and family. John gave his birthplace as Dover.
2. England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 (at Ancestry.co.uk, Nov 2010):
MINTER John of 41 Bow-street Middlesbrough died 27 May 1912 Probate York 12 June 1912 to John William Wood coal merchant and Thomas John Venis boilersmith Effects £48 18s 6d.
3. The BMD Index has the death of John Minter, aged 70, in Q2 1912 at Middlesbrough 9d/709.
March 2017: as a result of finding a marriage announcement from the Dover Express of 8 May 1874 (at findmypast.co.uk) it now looks as if this is the John Minter who married Frances Eliza Susanna MARSH in 1874 in Middlesborough, and then disappeared from UK records, presumably because the couple left for South Africa before the 1881 census. But as noted above, it seems that John came back to England by 1911, a widower.
