| Notes |
- The Streatfeild family's association with Chiddingstone dates back at least to the 16th century.
Although in various documents the family name is spelled STREATFIELD, there seems no douubt whatever that the correct spelling is STREATFEILD.
Henry Caldwall Streatfeild was baptised as the son of Sandforth & Frances Streatfeild at St Michael Bassishaw. This was a parish church in Basinghall Street in the City of London, standing on land now occupied by the Barbican Centre complex
19 January 1847: Henry was "admitted into the freedom of this City [London] by Redemption in the Company of Spectaclemakers".
1851 census: at 20 Kings Terrace, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire (all STREATFIELD) Hy. C (head, age obscured, Lt. C., Army, born City of London), Eleanor A P (wife, 43, born City of London) and Emily (daughter, 5, born Edinbro(Edinburgh)). Also three domestic servants.
Appeared in the 1855 Post Office Home Counties Directory as "Streatfeild Capt. Henry, High st. house" This was in Chiddingstone, Kent and described as follows "High Street House, the seat of Captain Henry Streatfeild, is a spacious and handsome mansion in the castellated style." The description of Chiddingstone, the village, contains a reference to "some handsome monuments to the Streatfeild family" at the church of St Mary.
High Street House was rebuilt as Chiddingstone Castle in the early 1800s and is now (2023) maintained by the Trustees of the Denys Eyre Bower Bequest. It is open to the public.
Henry died before the 1861 census. Although the Probate details below suggest Eleanor was in Belgium when her late husband's Will was proved, she must have returned to England before the 1861 census was taken - she was counted as lodging, along with her daughter Emily, in St Pancras, London. Eleanor died before the 1871 census was done.
Henry's death was reported in The Belfast Newsletter on 1 January 1861:
December 25 [1860], at Ostend, Col. H C Streatfeild, late of HM's 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers, aged 76 years.
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995:
4 February 1861 STREATFEILD, Henry Caldwall The Will of Henry Caldwall Streatfeild late a Lieutenant-Colonel in Her Majesty's Army deceased who died on 25 December 1860 at 94 Rue Longue Ostend in the Kingdom of Belgium was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of Eleanor Ann Penelope Streatfeild of 94 Rue Longue aforesaid Widow the Relict and the sole Executrix. Effects under £100.
